A story that is hard to believe

OK so I buy my taco sport model. That was two weeks ago. I notice a paint chip on the hood and ask the local dealer to fix it as well as do the spring tsb. Aside from the sales guy telling me I was wrong as he test drove the vehicle ( why??) then he runs it up a curb at the dealership not over the curb just a solid shot that pushed me forward. So I am not happy.

OK they do the tsb but the paint chip which was on the side edge of the hood was an issue. What they did was sand the rust off and brush it from a tube of touch up paint. So now I have a silver chip instead of a rust chip.

I say no go fix it right. They say ok The paint dude sands fills paints and clearcoats. Outside, did not mask the hood. You can see where I am going. Can you say overspray. Now in the sun it looked ok. So I drive it after questioning about the rough hood. No good answer. I am driving around and I can see the buff line where he stopped buffing close to the hood scoop. Then I see what looks like heavy overspray perhaps paint coming through the new clear. He did this in about two hours so there was no baking or drying.

So I bring it back. They think I am overly picky but when they see the hood in indirect sunlight, ouch they get it. Ok so now what. Well they decide to switch hoods with another vehicle (nevermind who buys that ride). Well the donor is a demo with 5k miles on it. a couple of minor imperfections so I say no. However I drive home and say well I am anal lets switch hoods.

Ok so they switch hoods, I am driving over to get a license plate and guess what I see? Two small wrinkles near where the end of the scoop nearest the window meets the hood. Service dude says he sees nothing. I say I can feel it. He brings back the car with my old scoop on it and says they look the same. I say no. He says what do you want. In a clean version I say take your car give me my money back. So I see the GM and detail guy. They see it and say they will try to buff it out the next day. I get a loaner car 3rd one I might add. Next day they cannot buff it out so it goes to another dealership in the same family to repaint the entire hood. The dealer has had my car more than me in the first two weeks of ownership. Moral of the story inspect car in detail before buying it. Easier than trying to go back and get things done. Finally any concerns about a car with a repainted hood compared to factory paint?

Edit - Got the truck back, after a couple of issues I ended up with a off road hood instead of a hood with a scoop. Fine with me. Overall this thing took about 6 days to resolve, but the dealer did stick to it and was good about it. I was able to pick up the running boards at dealer cost. I am quite happy with the results.

agreed however I am missing my ride, on the plus side miles are going on another ride. Hopefully it will all be good.

 

dude just rode into it, no damage, I think he was pissed he kept arguing with me when he should have been listening. Hell perhaps he was right and I was wrong but it is a mechanics job to assess the suspension not the sales dude.

 

Why would he run over a curb to test the rear out. They are supposed to weigh the bed down.

lack of clarity on my part. He was finished with his test drive and pulling into a slot at the dealership. Pulling in too fast and boinking the curb. Again enough to snap me forward. And piss me off. I said to him "dude drive it like it is your car not someone elses" Of course it is possible that is how he drives.

Regardless, the big thing is the final question in the post, what about the paint, should I be concerned or are my worries unfounded.

 

I only have the pix of the chip, not of the overspray.

However I can assure you it happened. I can snap a pic of the ride they gave me which is not a sport model.

Then I can show you the holes in my hand and side oh non believer!

 

Take it wheeling...the added paint scrapes will make the imperfections on the hood less noticeable.

 

lmao! Actually there is truth in your wisdom. If I could spin back a week in time I would invest in the stock mkt and ignore the chip and move on knowing it is a truck. If I am time traveling I might as well profit from it.

 

I think the OP has a valid reason to complain. He paid for it and he has the right to ask the dealership to make things right. When I bought my truck the salesperson and the detail guy are with me and asked me to look for imperfections in the paint job. I looked around closely and theres none I can find.

Now OP, if the dealership is trying to make it right give them a chance. I found it more times than usual if you establish a rapport with them they will take care of you. To the guy who tried to be a prick driving your truck like that he needs to grow up and be a man.

Now if the dealership still tries to be a dick then try to file a valid complaint, BBB is one thing I can think of. Good luck keep us updated.

 

True and agreed. The dealership has been good, usually saying what do you want done to make it right. The issue is a short cut at the beginning which turned out to be a problem. Would I buy another ride from them - probably.

Also I just found out that the last paint chip on the grill surround is not an issue as the truck I saw was the demo with my hood. They will bring it back to the dealer to switch the hood back to my truck. Hopefully I will have it soon as I am tired of driving loaners.

No that should read "anal" but then again he did admit that. Like was said before a good relationship with the dealer ( a specific person at the dealer) goes a long way even if they make it hard for you to do it.

 

Judging by what the OP said, I would have done the same thing. The stealership should fix it correctly the first time. It's not hard to do.

 

If i'm paying around $30,000 for a vehicle, it better be perfect. Props for staying on their ass.

 

well the dealership is used to people just seeing what they want in a vehicle, overlooking the imperfections, and making an impulse buy. most people won't notice a small paint chip. but when you are buying a 25k+ vehicle, you should want it to be perfect. i would probably do the same thing. give them hell until you get what you want! haha

 

but nothing in life is perfect... I say its a truck, its going to have imperfections, if its something more I would say something, but from your photo a little sanding, primer and touchup paint would have saved a lot of hassle. After offroading or being in a parking lot, dings are going to happen.
