about to buy a used 3rd gen - Not terribly worried about it, seems in good condition and I have all the records for service and maintenance, but the warranty literally expired 12 days ago, and the truck threw a CEL during my test drive. I've had loads of tacomas and I know they tend to throw CELs for stupid stuff (gas caps, etc) - I tightened the cap after I filled up but it got me thinking It's probably worth putting a warranty on it - Is there any dealer that does decent deals on them for us?

I had the factory 7yr/100k mile on my 2nd gen I'd just assume cover this one as well.

As soon, not assume. (voice texting or auto correct)

OP knows his warranty doesn't transfer.

You're betting against the odds with an extended warranty...

Truck price should reflect no OE warranty btw. I would not be buying a vehicle that throws CELs on test drives. IMO, bad choice.

I'm simply asking about warranty options guys, - I'm well acquainted with 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen tacos - the cost of a full 7yr/100k mile extended bumper to bumper is <1600$ - the code thrown is evap system which is almost ALWAYS the fuel cap - I appreciate everyones concerns but the last thing that concerns me on a taco is a CEL, and unlike my audi's the cost of warranties are pretty low on all toyotas enough so that the first time anything happens it's worth having one.

The real issue with used 3rd gens is that they aren't much cheaper than a decent new deal - but this is a limited with low miles (for a 16) and a good enough deal I'm considering it. Worse case I can just go to my local toyota dealer and pay for the warranty, was just looking for options - on my raptor there was a dealer who was a forum sponsor who offered warranties at employee pricing (cost +100$ basically)

I feel like the request was pretty obvious - I Was asking if anyone had an extended warranty they liked or recommended - or a dealer that is offering better pricing than others... At worst I can go to any toyota dealer and buy the factory extended warranty. At the time of a new purchase it's only about 800$, after the fact it's about twice that.

I misread your first post. Initially after seeing the used car throwing codes, I wasn’t paying attention.

After I reread it, I saw you were looking for the best discounts on a warranty for it.

    Good luck.

no worries - and thanks - I'm not very worried about the CEL - the price on the truck is well below book - my only real complaint is it has some ugly ass fuel wheels on it... well not necessariy ugly just not my thing. At least it has decent KO2s on it though.

truck has been inspected so is eligible for extended - the only rule is any work has to be 30 days after purchase. I haven't signed papers yet, but again the factory 7yr/100k extension is only 1600$ - to me that's cheap peace of mind, I was just hoping for cheaper peace of mind lol.

Warranties are a waste of money. Instead of spending the money on your warranty throw that cash into an account and leave it there to cover major repairs.

Dealers clear a higher profit margin on warranties than the vehicles they sell. They don’t sell warranties because it loses them money.

$1,600 is not cheap peice of mind. Thats almost an engine or trans rebuild.
There is no major issue related to a CEL code that would cost $1,600.

The truck threw a CEL before you purchased it. Before you buy it make them fix it and see if they will be willing to put it in writing they will cover future issues related to that specific issue for a year.
    Thats not an unreasonable request.

Also... I have to ask. Why the hell are you buying a truck you are worried has a major problem?
If you are that freaked out you’ll blow $1,600 on a problem that may not exist... you are buying a vehicle you shouldn’t be buying.

So you need to decide if you are buying a truck with problems or creating a problem that doesn’t exist.

The cheapest and best piece of mind is to take that money you were going to use for an extended warranty and put it in your "emergency use only" savings account. Do the same thing for the extended warranties on your tv, your house, etc. In the long run, you lose more money by buying warranties. And you lose sleep when trying to fight the 3rd party underwriter for a warranty claim.

For me personally, I avoid extended warranties like the plague. But you do you.

EDIT: Listen to that guy above me ^^^. He said it better.

The proof that both of these are true is the simple fact that the warranties are for sale at all. They would only sell them if they make money and they only make money if on average people claim less than the original cost of the warranty. Furthermore a Tacoma is probably one of the worst cases too. Odds are probably way better for a warranty on a Land Rover - still less than 50/50 else they wouldn't be for sale. Odds on a Tacoma warranty are at the bottom of the list.

It appears you've already made up your mind to buy one, so what was the point here other than seeking praise of your own financial wizardry?
Every piece of advice you've shot down, so use google, find a warranty, and move along. Everyone will be happier.
