I wish I had your problem..lol some people on the outside would love to have your truck. That being said,no truck or car is without their faults,or things you wish you could change.
As it's been said, keep the truck a year and see if the kinks will work themselves out. If not, sell it and take the loss if there is one lol
I love my Frontier, but also hate it..by the end of this year I'll be in a Tacoma. Take it as it is and go with it! Do some mods

The Tacoma engine is not a true Atkinson Cycle engine. It is an Otto Cycle engine which has variable valve timing that holds the intake open into the compression stroke. This helps to lower the engine’ compression ratio when it is not truly needed.

I kind’a know how you feel... I owned sporty Mercedes for 5 years before switching over to the Tacoma. I just try to remember it’s a truck, and only a truck. I didn’t want a full size (would of bought a GMC Sierra Denali instead), I wanted a midsize variant for several reasons... and after much deliberation I chose the Tacoma. To me, it drives terribly (especially as compared to a Canyon)... but the Tacoma has many other attributes that fit my requirements. Again, it’s just a truck... a utility vehicle, easily replaceable, and NOT the love of my life. I’ll use it for 3+ years, give it to my son, then go get whatever my heart desires at that time... enjoy yours for awhile and see if it is worthy of staying in your driveway. If not, trade it... only your opinion really matters.

the ECT 'On at start up" mod erases all the power and tranny issues i was stressing over.IMO
also, when i run into another 3rd gen and their owner i ask how they like the truck. they all say they love it. i then ask if they know of this forum and all say no. that should tell you something.

Everyone saying “use it as a truck” is 100% correct. I’ve had a couple of Tacoma’s. 2nd Gen and 3rd and went through a little bit of buyers remorse on the 3rd Gen. mostly because I had a perfect paid off truck and wondered why I got myself into a payment again...Anyway, when I use 4x4 in the sand or snow or to get to camping spots, or tow my boat, or load lumber or tools in the bed it all makes sense and I realize what attracted me to buy it. I should add I have no need for a full size other than it “would be nice.” Good Luck!

That's not true. It is effectively in an Atkinson cycle. The Compression stroke is shorter than the exhaust stroke while in Atkinson Cycle mode.

I had buyers remorse driving home from the dealership, lol. I missed the room and power of the Tundra I had just traded in. My Tundra would jump at the slightest tap of the gas; and you almost have to drop the pedal to the floor to get any kind of snappy response from the Tacoma.

I told myself I would give it a year, and worst case I would sell the Tacoma and go back to the Tundra if I was still unhappy then. The good news in this scenario is that these things hold their value so resale shouldn't be painful.

A few months, 3K miles, and several mods later, I love my Tacoma! I do find myself hitting the ECT button quite a bit (try it, you'll like it), and I've learned to chill while driving too. I just love being able to customize the truck. Also, the taco community is awesome -- that helps! I've met several people on the road that just want to talk Tacoma... like the Jeep community but cooler, lol.

Toyota fixed everything with the Engine tune with the New TSB. I had similar complaints with my Manual transmission. The new tune fixes the engine, but I think the auto-transmission still has quirks.

Long story short, get the new tune. If you still don't like it, sell the vehicle.

Maybe I have low expectations but I am totally happy with my 2017 off road! It rides better than my previous two trucks (2010 F350 and 2001 GMC 1500) gets OK mileage (average 11.9L/100k - 20mpg) and tows my 5700 lb boat fine. Sure it has some shortcomings - I drive it everyday and enjoy every mile, the shortcomings don't bug me cause I know every vehicle has them - there's no perfect one!
Don't let your OCD stop you from enjoying a great (not perfect) truck!

I came from a 2012 Evo X GSR (M/T) with the Sight/Sound/Leather package. I ended up lowering it with full bolt ons and a custom tune. The car was awesome. Zero issues for 6 years / 55k miles.

I purchased a 2018 TRD Pro (A/T) over a month ago -- after a ton of research, forums, YouTube and I couldn't be happier every time I get in the truck!

I feel like the people with remorse rushed into their purchase? What is missing in your mind? I am extremely OCD as well..
