TruTrac, unless you need the locker for a lot of Off Roading.

From what I read, it depends on how you’re your going to off-road. If your getting one rear wheel off the ground a lot, you need to use the brake at the same time in order to get the wheel on the ground to spin with the Truetrac. The locker obviously means their locked and both spin all the time regardless.

What I like about the Truetrac is it just works pretty much all the time. You don’t have have to engage it or flip any switches. Just go

Will a trutrac spin both tires off the line? I really hate the 1 wheel burnout

    A thing or two...
The Trutrac will have better road manners when going around turns, but the Detroit should unlock for turns. I was considering the Detroit when I ordered my 3rd member from ECGS. For street driven trucks, they suggested the Trutrac or a selectable locker over the Detroit. I didn't want to deal with 1-wheel peels when I get around to adding FI, so I went with the Trutrac. @EatSleepTacos has a PowerTrac (if I remember right) which is similar to a Detroit, so he could give his perspective.

The Detroit locker should be an auto locker. Unless he's looking at their e-locker, but it isn't referred to as a Detroit so probably not.

    It should.

Thanks for clarifying. I was thinking selectable for some reason.

I have a mechanical locker and I love it. Easily the best bang for your buck, and I love how simple it is. No need to run any air lines/wires so just less points of failure. Never need to think about hitting a switch either to lock it up.

It took getting used to on road, but now I hardly even know it’s there since I’ve adjusted my driving style. Would definitely recommend.

What did you have to adjust with your driving style

The locker locks when under moderate throttle, so now I have to use a light, consistent throttle through turns. For a right turn, I don’t accelerate quickly through the turn, or it’ll lock and I’ll chirp tires. Or the locker will unlock with a loud bang (which is a normal characteristic of mechanical lockers, they’re noisy).

You have to gradually accelerate through the right turn, and once you’re straight you can hammer it as hard as you want.

Sounds kinda annoying but you get used to it real quick. I drive like a grandpa anyways so it was a quick adjustment period.

Here’s my thread on locker install for anyone interested.

@Jcyr You probably won’t be driving like a grandpa with that turbo setup. Lol. Especially with those new injectors working nicely

I prefer removing the bed. Makes life a lot easier, even for something like changing out brake lines.
I use an engine hoist with ratchet straps and drive out from under the bed. I just put moving blankets between cab and bed.

I have the Truetrac in the rear, I like it a lot. It's loads better off-road than when I had an open diff. Concurrently with my engine install I'm doing the front- I originally bought an Aussie locker for the front (I have manual hubs) BUT then a member successfully put a limited slip in the front and I'm torn about which to install. I don't know much I'll be able to use the limited slip up front with my FJ t-case but I do know the Aussie locker will be hella useful up front off-road with the limited slip in the back. I'm considering the AWD 4Runner case and limited slip up front so I can have an AWD turbo Taco. I'm torn between off-road or turbo road use.

    I think it’s confirmed.
Looks like he’s scrapping the twin turbo idea.

Just like on the 2nd Gen , very limited space on the driver side. Unless a LOT of things are relocated.
