Ok I went to the DMV to get my NY state truck registered in CA. They want me to go to a weigh station and get a certificate of how much it weighs. Is this normal? I also heard you need commercial plates to even drive with anything in the back of your truck in CA is this true?

You need commercial plates for any pickup truck, regardless of whether you put anything in the back. The only exception is a truck with a camper shell permanently mounted (no j-hooks). If you go the camper shell route, you cannot take it off unless you re-register it as a commercial vehicle.

The commercial fee is based on weight. Our trucks are right on the edge of two weight classes. Over 4000 lbs and it's $80 per year for the weight fee. Under 4000 lbs, and it's $25 per year. Take everything possible off your truck (e.g. spare) before you get it weighed to make it as light as possible.

The weight fee is just a portion of the registration. If you look on your slip, you'll see the seperate fee for weight ($80 or $25). My renewal is $400.

You'd be wrong, all out of state registration in CA requires that the vehicle is weighed & then goes before a DMV "referee" for evaluation.

Pretty sure ALL trucks in CA. have the "commercial" rating included in the registration fee.

    Welcome to California !!:D
