Bret, which rim? Forged? If so that’s heavy.
My 4.88’s pull 18x12 weld Cheyenne’s and 33 nitro mud grapplers with ease. And grapplers are pretty heavy

Hey y’all, I’m at about week 3 with my 5.29’s on 37x12.5r20 and I got them broken in about a week in. Had east coast gear supply do the install for front and rear. I must say they are dope! I was able to use 6th again and I even have low end power. It feels so good to drive the truck again. I have no trouble hitting 80+ with RPM’s around 3k. If anyone is on the fence between 4.88 and 5.29 I say do 5.29 cause I was on the fence and I’m glad I went the way I did. If anyone has any in depth questions feel free to ask and I can give y’all some answers.

Sharp looking Taco. Good info about the gearing, Nick

Is it a manual tranny? 5 speed or 6?

So Shawn's 8.75" elocker 3rd is almost done.

The underside of the pinion flange has been cleaned and wet sanded with 1500 sandpaper.....perfectly re-usable of course. Nice looking oem pinion seal.
    IMG_2848.jpg

So glad to see that JustDifferentials is packing the exact same factory pinion seal in their Nitro master install kits.
    IMG_2849.jpg

Here's that sensor....best for the gear installer to remove it to avoid damage to it while setting up gears. Has an o-ring to seal it.

The factory thought it better to put the pinion shim behind the BIG inner race. So this .078" pinion shim will be re-used and let's see what happens.
    IMG_2856.jpg

The big inner race is pressed in place with the shim.
    IMG_2858.jpg

Outer race is pressed in place. A special tool I have allows the existing oil retainer to be re-used with zero damage to it(shown below the race).
    IMG_2859.jpg

New massive pinion bearing is to be pressed on the 529 pinion shaft......

SAS,1985 FJ60 flipped axle, 35" KO2,5" AllPro leafpacks front and rear,
Using the factory washer plates resulted in backlash that was a bit too tight to send out....but perfectly acceptable to do a paint test.
I was measuring .004 .005 and sometimes .006" That will change next go around.
    IMG_2875.jpg

Drive side..............could be a little deeper
    IMG_2876.jpg

Coast...................agrees on being a little deeper

    IMG_2877.jpg

The pinion tooth's comet tail says it's too tucked into the root of the tooth(shallow on the ring gear).
    IMG_2879.jpg

If the comet tail were to swing out a little bit closer to center but not all the way in the center....
like maybe halfway to the center then that would be the ticket.

So if I were to add .003" to the pinion depth(078 + 003).....and maybe .003~.005" to the left smaller washer plate then all should be good.
Tomorrow morning will see more pics here .....

Wow great pics and info. For a little bit I thought I was going to do this one myself but after seeing the last few posts I'm going to take it to a shop.

5.29 um. Especially with saddle and those elevation changes.
The trucks are 6 speed regardless so I don’t think it’ll be too overgeared

Ya, I was gonna mention, when I finish this 8.75", that this is not something a backyard mechanic should try. The right tooling and a little magic

My 01 Tacoma with auto with 35" tires with 529 Nitro gears has a .71 overdrive and I see a real 70 mph at just over 2500 rpm for reference.
At 80 mph, I will be doing about 3000 rpm.

You have 2 overdrives Nick.....sounds like the 5th gear was not kicking in for you.

Your first overdrive of .69 is even better than my .71 OD.....your 37" tires are bigger than my 35"....
with your 2nd overdrive of .58 which is pretty amazing of an overdrive, you should have seen about 2400 or 2500 rpm at 80+

Drive side..........Pinion depth increased from 078 to 081 and this is the proper depth....might even be considered slight deep
    IMG_2881.jpg

Coast agrees that depth is NICE
    IMG_2882.jpg

the comet tail is moving away from the root.....perfect

    IMG_2883.jpg

tooth #2 moving off the root too
    IMG_2884.jpg

tooth #3 is also off the root so this is all good and says to not touch the pinion depth again.

Now to do one final tweek of the carrier bearing washer plates and this baby is going together.
Oh ya, these 8.75 elocker installs don't go together in just 2 or 3 hours....believe me.

New crush was loaded in place.....splash guard in place....seal to be tapped on.
    IMG_2886.jpg

A nice smooth 12 in/lb of pinion preload and DING! the new nut. Key to getting the thick walled crush sleeve to crush without hurting yourself is anti-seize.
    IMG_2887.jpg

The o'ring on the sensor was lubed up and is pushed in place.
    IMG_2888.jpg

Center carrier wiggled into place.....008" has been added to this factory washer plate. Adding shims to this side increases the backlash value and also the bearing preload.
    IMG_2889.jpg

The 095 factory washer plate remained the same....but took some good taps to coax into place. The brass hammer prevents damage to the plate.

Backlash was checked on every other tooth(20 recorded values). The minimum noted was .007".....no worries about gear oil starvation due to too tight of a backlash :)

Notes that I always take snapshots of. I added an extra .008" of Carrier bearing preload over what the factory washer plates offered.
The left washer plate was .102" and I upped it to .110"
