Read an article where it says you have to take the wheel off to change the oil filter. That can't be right.

Not true. Helps if you have a lift for more ground clearance or a Jack and safety stands though.

I'm looking everywhere for proof that's debunked. But all I'm coming up with is confirmation the wheel indeed needs to be removed. I have no idea however.

I am not sure how to respond to your comment. If you really think that, then you may be the most foolish person on this forum, including banned members.

With any depreciating asset you are going to sell on a regular basis, which retains a good amount of value like a vehicle, you can't do a fair comparison unless you consider what you will get back when you sell the item. Without doing this, you will never be able to factor in true cost of ownership. So unless you plan to keep the item forever, if you don't take into account the terminal value (value upon sale), then you aren't taking into account the full cost of the vehicle plain and simple.

After I drove my first Tacoma for nearly five years and took a $3k hit and my brother's Nissan, which he bought the same day for $3k more than I paid, booked for $2k less than my Tacoma sold for. He listed it the same day (our parents helped us buy our first to vehicles at the same time) but sold it almost three months later for $3k less than I got for mine (essentially he took a $6,000 loss owning a truck for the same period of time). I had my next vehicle paid off in 20 months while he ended up taking an additional two years to pay off his new truck (a Tacoma btw).

The next Tacoma I sold was my 2007 which I paid $26,000 for new. Drove it five years and sold it for $24,000 or about $33 a month for a car with a warranty the entire time I drove it. Can't lease a car for that. Ultimately, by owning Tacomas, I retain more money in my pocket compared to buying other trucks. They have that much of a hold on the market to the point it is crazy. They also hold their value so well that I would never buy one used.

My 4Runner and Tundra held up well depreciation wise, but couldn't touch the Tacoma (and they still hold their value like crazy). My 2011 Land Cruiser, just due to the higher starting cost and being in a luxury segment, as depreciated the most, but I plan to keep it until it goes to the junkyard (and I got the benefit of the depreciation by buying used). My next daily driver will be another new Tacoma.

Good personal fiscal responsibility means understanding what rate of return you are getting on your investments, and what your net expenditures are costing you.

As long as the replacement cost on Tacomas allows me to sell them 3-5 years later for a small drop, Tacomas will continue to be the best value in regards to a 4x4 Truck by a landslide.

If there's one thing I've learned in 3.5 years of business school, big depreciation is no bueno

Well said, and I agree across the board especially on not buying one used due to that price.

So I just left a 2018 F250 in trade for my 2019 Taco. I loved the F250. As mentioned above it had a great interior with great gizmos. I was nervous about the long term reliability to a degree but thought proper care would be OK. Ultimately just not the right truck for me and the dealer gave me a good deal to part with it. Why didn't I go for the Ranger?

I did look at the Ranger but never even test drove it. I have never associated the Ranger with being reliable or a truck for the long term. They are expensive for what I wanted. They are nice and have a great interior. I liked the ZR2 Colorado offering better but really hate the GM interiors and reliability. I grew up in GM cars. Overall they just do not hold a candle to the Tacoma's reliability, resale, resale and reputation.

Except when the Tacoma first came out, it had more power than the competition with a much smaller engine. When my truck was new it had more HP than the 4.0 ranger and 4.3 s10.

I'll eventually test drive it again because I want to like the 3rd gen, but the power feels like it is of marginal improvement over my truck.

Hopefully it’s like subies where they say you have to do something extreme for something simple but with some skill you can skip that. Mostly because all that sounds like a pain in the ass. How often are the intervals?

No clue but likely 10mos or 10k miles. Just a guess.

Good time to rotate the tires anyway and I am guessing it has 10k or once a year intervals so I doubt its a big deal.

There's going to be a whole lot of people paying for oil changes and getting no new filter. I've marked tires before to see if the dealership changes them on my free Toyota ones and it's come back with all 4 in the same spot even though the paperwork is marked rotated. They're always pressed for time, no way many will do this step.

Quick change places are also bays, not like they can really take your wheel off as it's not lifted up.

I prefer to do my own most of the time. But taking a wheel off sounds like a huge hassle. No way would I buy a vehicle with that as a requirement.

The same amount of people who drop 40K on a Tacoma then come to this forum to complain how it drives only to say they didn't even test drive it.

I did my last oil change myself. I didn't remove anything or have to raise the front and I have stock tires and lift.
