When do you think it's time for new tires?

Just curious and couldn't find any posts on this - when do y'all feel like you need to get new tires? Do you wait till the tires look like racing slicks? Do you use the lincoln's head measurement? What do you do before you decide to buy new ones? Mine were put on in 07 and have about 40,000 on them, Toyo Open Country's, and I'm going back and forth about whether to give them 1 more winter or if that's tempting fate and their traction. They spin a bit in rain already, but don't know what that means if anything. They've still got a good amount of tread remaining, but they're definitely past 1/2.

 

I think you answered your own question,but the head of a penny works pretty good.

 

When they don't perform as they should any longer. If I don't feel comfortable with my tires, it's time for new ones!

There are wear bars molded into the gaps in the tire tread. I use those. They are at about 1/16 inch remaining. Lincoln's measurement is pretty much the same thing.

I am in California though, you probably should not wait that long. Ya'll actually have winter where you are!

if you can get your hands on a tread meter from a tire shop, 8/32" is considered bald...

 

I like to run mine down to the point that I can still sell them to someone. But thats just my way of thinking.
