Cooper discoverers are nice, comfy and quiet. Great on and off road. Maybe even better gas milage than the goodyear wranglers or I'm just nuts.

I was able to fit my full size Cooper 255/85R16 spare in the stock location without modification.

It's tight, but it definitely still fits.

Cooper Discoverer ST (non Maxx) and Dick Cepek Extreme Countries both come in 255/85/16 and are both lighter weight. I believe the ST is D load and the DC has a light sidewall? Just more skinny options.

I switched last year to Cooper Discoverer AT3’s LT’s and have loved them so far. Quiet and comfortable on road and great off road. I bet they are even quieter then my stock tires. 265/75/16 with no rubbing. From Socal desert/mountain trails to the Alpine Loop in Colorado, they have done me well. Was surprised to see how many locals had them up in CO on some the rigs I saw doing passes too. I’m sure others are great options just thought I’d give my 2cents. There’s an entire thread about em in the tire section if you want to read more.

One caveat: I don't believe the spare tire location is different with a longbed, but that might be the case. I can only confirm that it fits on my 2019 TRD OR Doublecab Longbed without any issues whatsoever.

I'd head over to one of the many 255 tire threads to confirm that it also fits in the shortbed spare tire location. I think it does, but don't hold me to that! lol

I kayak fish all the time and had to have a long bed, can't imagine having a shorter bed. Only difference between our trucks is mines a 2018 TRD OR DCLB in cement lol.

I'm a fan of the wildpeaks. I run stock size as well. I've run falkens on several trucks and generally I like their treadlife. I also like the idea of a slightly more aggressive tire without crazy amounts of road noise. Compared to some of the other big-tread tires, the wildpeaks are relatively quiet and don't come with a huge milage penalty.

    So there's your good

Falken has 255/80/17 listed on their website for the wildpeak, but haven't had much luck finding anyone selling them.

May be a new size so who knows

I ran cooper discoverer AT3s on my last suv and loved them (265/70/R16). They aren’t as aggressive as KO2s or others, but did the job for what I need. I mostly used them for lighter off-roading on remote forest roads etc. and not boulder crawling or deep mudding or anything. You can get them for cheap and they are good all around in snow and rain. If you do more hardcore off-roading, you probably want something else.

Now that I have my new Tacoma, I might run something more aggressive.

I have a Discoverer ST (non Maxx) tire as a spare (the rest are ST Maxx)...I had to run it once and man, that thing howls on the street. Don't know why, I guess its the tread design, but it's a loud tire.

That’s good to know, I didn’t read about that. How do you like the MAXXs? Do they really pull to the right? How’s the tread life and impact to gas mileage? Thanks!

I love the ST Maxx, they're quiet and they take a beating better than my KO2s did previously....the BFGs would chunk up something fierce. Any tire will when used on rocks enough times and my Maxx's have some signs of wear after 6 months, but I do put them through the ringer once in awhile.

I've used them in dirt, rock, sand, mud and snow so far and the only time they didn't do so well was in mud, but they aren't an MT so I didn't really expect them to. I've been happy with them.

And yes, they do pull to the right a bit. Not noticeable on city streets but at highway speeds it can be a little annoying.

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
I'll give you some good. Ran em on my 4Runner, Tacoma, my friend's F150 and my other friends Chevy Colorado Z71. Only complaint was balance issue on the 4Runner, other 3 vehicles were good.

Got a different set of rims, it ended up being a RIM out of balance, not the tire....fixed the problem.

Look up 4Runner steering wheel shake, I think there's a bad batch of wheels out there.

In the end the Falken Wildpeaks were cost effective, and did really well in muddy, rocky, and wet conditions.

Thanks. Did you notice a better size between a 16" wheel and a 17" wheel in the Wildpeaks? I really want to buy a set of black TRD 17s to replace my stock 16s.

E rated KO2's for hard use.
My road home to the back side of Haleakala volcano on Maui has miles of gravel, dirt and mud sections, many miles of bad pavement with deep, sharp potholes, and chunks of sharp lava rock that fall from the cliffs above or stick out from the ancient lava rock walls on the sides. Rivers run at the fords, and sometimes the road is replaced with a sea of boulders that need to be moved to get through. Been doing this run for 30 years, in trucks, jeeps and dual sport bikes, usually fast when the tourists aren't clogging it up, and I love it. At the end, my driveway is 3/4 mile of steep uphill with cement strips (usually wet & slick with leaves & grass clippings) and mud sections. Even downhill can be a thrill. This is tough on tires; bad things happen.
I'm on my fourth set of KO's. The current E rated KO2's are the best survivors and always win the traction equation, given care and common sense. I change them out after about 25k miles (tread is my friend) and have not yet had a failure or major chunking with them. They are quiet and comfortable on pavement at 30psi warm.
OEM and other consumer and even many aggressive looking tires I've tried blow out in the sidewalls or get nails or lose big chunks. Before I poured the cement strips, when the driveway was a major daily challenge, I ran BFG Mud Terrains. They were good for throwing mud from the treads if kept spinning fast enough, but they would blow out or throw chunks.
My wife drives a Mercedes GLK 250 diesel awd and Michelin 17" Defender LTX M/S tires work great for that vehicle and are also survivors for moving quickly on our road.
