Is it safe to spray parts with rustoleum?

Hello!

I have some work coming up (all front bushings, new OME suspension, new carrier bearing, etc) where I'll be pulling a lot of parts off the truck. While I'm in there and have pieces off I want to pressure wash them clean. Is it worth it (or safe) to apply a coat of rustoleum or something to extend the life of these components after cleaning them? Specifically I'm thinking of my control arms and maybe the prop shafts.

I live in AZ so rust isn't a huge concern. But we're considering a move to Texas later this year and I figure it's easier to paint things while they're off the truck. What are your thoughts, TW?

Shouldn't have to worry about rust in Texas either, they don't use road salt there as it doesn't get cold enough. Can get pretty humid but that won't lead to much rust unless you completely neglect the truck. Rustoleom should be fine

 

I second the POR15 recommendation. Rustoleum won’t hurt but isn’t the best solution if you’re going to the trouble of cleaning and painting the parts. As others have said, you should have any trouble in TX.

 

Yes that is a perfect time!
There are a lot of nook and crannies that you cant get to with the suspension on.
I like magnet paint better than the POR15. POR 15 is great sticking to rust but not so much already painted surfaces.

People say you don't have to worry about rust in Texas but it is a large and diverse state my, home. The east has swamp lands and a lot of moisture in the air. There is the coast that has a lot of salt in the air The pan handle flat and that freezes and gets snow and there is West Texas that is dry as a bone.

I used cup and wheel wire brushes on a angle grinder, and for a drill
I welded one of the drill brushes to a long bolt so I could work it in even more spots
I also welded some small chain to a small bolt and used it on the drill to loosen as much grime as I could in hard spots before painting.

 

I hit my sliders, skids, and any thing else with a wire brush and a coat of rustoleum for touch ups and it works fine.

 

This is true, people say us Californian's never have to worry about rust and for the most part it's true, but if you live near the coast or up in the mountains where they do salt the roads, rust is a very real concern
