I shattered my ankle in a traumatic snowboard accident 8 years ago. I've had four surgeries and still have pretty much zero dorsiflexion and very limited range of motion every other direction, arthritis, yada yada. I'm curious on your initial thoughts after having ankle replacement? I've been contemplating going TAR myself as I'm starting to have back and foot problems and now have sciatica in my other leg. How hard can you be on the thing? Is 35 to young to do TAR? Any advice looking back now that you've done this?

*Also I realize this isn't supposed to be an ankle replacement thread so I apologize for the brief hijack, just really want to speak to someone who has had this procedure done as I've never met anyone who has.

I was just gonna post the same thing. Spend enough time outdoors pursuing hobbies that involve hiking, backpacking, peak bagging or climbing and eventually you're gonna screw up an ankle, knee, or hip. I'd say that is completely relevant to the thread.

pro grille, raised vinyl "TACOMA" letters on tailgate, de-badged, tint, ARE truck cap, BFG KO2s waterport, vinyl Tacoma inserts in dash, red "TRD Engine"push button start, MTF!!!
Petzl is kind of a "premier" name in headlamps. There are plenty of good ones out there though. I look for lumens and throw distance to determine lighting and then I'm looking at waterproof a d drop proof. That said I had a $10 Energizer lamp that worked great for years of field use and an Infantry officer. Nowadays my wife and I both have $40 Petzl lamps. A quick Google search might help a little too just to see what might fit your needs best. Good luck.

Been happy with my black diamond spot headlamp.
Does the job for camping and occasional night hike or cave. Only issue was I had to figure out the lock feature the hard way after batteries died from it turning on in my pack.

All of the above brands are good to go. Don't overlook Princeton Tec and Streamlight. Lots of good brands and lots of choices within each brand.

Pants for snow, but technically not snow pants So ive always hiked in shorts, even if freezing tems, i just layer will a long wool sock. But ive kinda got into light mountaineering and have swapped my trail runners with some more snow/ice friendly mountaineering boots. But the real question is, what kind of pants are best for this kind of stuff? Any opinions or recommendations? Thanks!

So, a buddy and I are considering entering the Mammoth Sniper challenge in the next couple years. One of the more important parts of the match is the hike/ruck/camp portion of it. This year, it was a 3 day/2 night 30 mile event, rucking from challenge to challenge over the course of those 3 days that make up the Friday/Saturday/Sunday of the first weekend of January, this year in Georgia. Imagine backcountry hiking with an interspersed shooting match where you wait up to an hour to shoot in the cold. Historically the temps have been between 0 and 40 degrees.

The punchline to this context, is that I have very little backpacking/backcountry gear suited to this kind of event. If I wanted to start reading on backcountry hiking/hunting gear for this, where could I start looking? I'm looking to start reading and prepping now so that as I start to train for it I can use the gear I plan to carry as training weight. I've already got Steven Rinella's "The complete guide to Hunting, butchering, and cooking wild game" which is my starting point for the gear prep, but from there I'm really lost as I've only got limited backpack camping experience and a few summertime day hikes under my belt.

a friend of mine did that 1 or 2 matches ago. He said it was a pretty tough gig.

That's the idea. I've been petty unhappy with my physicality in the last few years and figure that a match like that combines my shooting and camping hobbies well enough to get me excited and training towards a goal.
