If you have a 19 ranger you should comment on the rest of that article. Like I said above I hope it’s like subies where the manual says it but it doesn’t need to be done

“A service procedure obtained by TTAC states that, after removing the left front wheel, a technician or owner must then remove an access panel secured by nine push-pin retainers. From there, one removes the filter with an end cap tool. To actually drain the oil, which of course you’ll accomplish before attacking that filter, you’ll first need to unbolt the power steering control module underbody shield. Four bolts hold that on.”

Tire on oil filter and power steering on drain. If so hopefully a fumoto valve is a quick fix

I can't find any dealers with rangers in my area, but you have one and have driven it enough to already justify an oil change?

Well shoot, just looked and non me local either, just “dealer ordered”. I thought these were rolling off the trucks already. Then back on them on the side of the road, jk.

Since no one has seen it yet so it's hard to say, maybe if you are in a pit like at the quick change places you might be able to reach in without removing the wheel.

if it's like any of the other current ford motors, the oil pan is composite and they use a weird plastic drain plug. fumoto wouldn't be compatible.

Oh sorry. I thought you were referring to the Taco. I can't imagine Ford would design that complicated of an Oil drain procedure.

The procedure sounds more complicated than it is. The filter is on the side of the block like the 2TR or 5VZ. It will probably be messy but you should be able to reach between the tire and the fender liner to access it. And it's a spin-on filter instead of cartridge.

It's possible Ford didn't include a hole on the belly skid for the oil drain plug... At least the oil pan is not plastic.

The wife got a call from my buddy who owns a couple of Ford dealers. We asked to see a FX4 XLT 302A when one comes in and apparently that’s one of the first trucks they have coming in. Not that it’ll be the first one in existence but I’ll have a look for this oil change nonsense. I’m guessing it’s just the service manual way of doing it and not really that complicated, similar to how the oil catch on a 1GR recommends tubing to a pan in the FSM IIRC but only needs a coke bottle wedged between the radiator shield and belt.

We are down to buying either a Ranger or a Colorado for her if we decide to pull the trigger this year. She wants to get a small horse trailer, rated around 5,000 lbs, but she doesn’t want a full sized truck again. So we are down to either a Diesel Canyon or Ecoboost Ranger. She has no interest in towing with a V6 Tacoma after our experiences in the past towing a TT with my Tacoma.

We were actually leaning towards a Highlander for the family until the last couple of months when she started working with horses more again to help relieve some stress.

I really do want to like it....

When I bought my '14 Tacoma, the only reason I did was because the new Ranger's were gone. The Colorado/Canyon was not even considered, nor was the Honda Ridgeline. Dad had a '12 Tacoma and I had driven it quite a bit which made the decision easier. I loved my Tacoma and because I got a screaming good deal on it, I traded it in for a '17. I still don't regret that decision even if I did spend $$ for a tune. It's still a truck and does exactly what it is advertised to do. I probably won't upgrade anytime soon though since Toyota has started including all of the nanny "safety" features.

This thing has none of the essence that was the original Ranger. It really reminds me of the "new" Honda Odessy, erh. uh, I mean Ridgeline. It looks like a mini-van with the back half cut off and turned into a stubby platform that resembles a usable bed. Also, at least with the Tacoma I can get a MT and a V6 (ie. multiple engine choices).

I thought the next ranger would look like a mini-F150

Life would be simpler for everyone if a competent service tech(along with an equally incompetent service tech) were part of all design teams. You need the IST to get a handle on how things will get f*cked up due to laziness.

The next Ranger was always going to be this truck we now see. It's 8 years old.

If someone cannot figure out how to take a tire off then they honestly should not be attempting an oil change.

Too be fair it received a refresh a couple of years ago that changed most of the body panels and we are getting a new powertrain in North America. Arguably it’s a new as the 3rd gen Tacoma is over the 2nd gen since they share many basic components and their layout. I was a bit surprised too though when Ford left the front end the same other than adding a real metal bumper. I thought they would of done some steel stamping to make the front a little more like the F150.

The tire off doesn’t seem like a big issue if the intervals are similar on a 10k range as at that time you might as well just rotate the tires. I am more interested on the additional steps around the drain to be honest.
