Roof rack on double cab or Shell? Or both?

I'm going to buy a Thule rack system for my truck, but I'm not sure if I should get one for the roof of the cab or for my shell, which is a Century Ultra. My shell covers the 5' bed so it's not very long and I'm not planning on having it on all the time. (not planning on it but who knows).
Also, I've been thinking about putting a basket on (moab) and don't know how it would look on the cab. Any rack system opinions are welcome. Thanks.

I think it would look better with it just on the shell.

It'd look better on the shell for sure... I'll get some pics of mine. The nice thing about the roof rack on the shell is that you could rig a pulley system in your garage and use the cross bars from the rack to lift your shell off of your truck and store it when you want to take it off... at least, that's what I'm planning to do :D

Thanks. As soon as I get my garage cleaned out for the winter, I plan on putting my plan into action. I'll definitely take some pics when I do it.

If only my garage was big enough to fit my taco in it. Ah well... Would love to see the pics.

If you don't have one: Don't forget to install a overhead retractable extension cord... the work wonders.

It would probably look something like this I'm guessing

I've seen a Tacoma locally with the Snugtop XTR on it, and I'm not sure that I like it.

:p I dunno... this guy doesn't have anything mounted on his. Maybe I'll try and snap some pics of it, as I've seen him around quite a bit lately.

Why don't you just get the OEM rack?

I notice some people around here don't like the OEM rack, any reason why?

    A few bolts are different.
The rack bars a basket will work you use the same attachments as you would for putting a Thule/Yakima rack on a FJ Cruiser or an Xtera. The downfall is the height, it will be sitting very tall on top of all that, close to an extra 8"-10"

I say keep it on the cab. With the DC shortbed, it'll look like it's too far back. I keep a cargo box on my AC and prefer it much better over the cab than on the shell. I'd also stay away from Thule's tracker II system, it adds way too much height to the shell, there's got to be more low-profile ways to install bars.

I have the Yakima roof rack without a shell with a rcvr hitch goal post for carrying a canoe, I don't have any current picks but will get some up later. It looks okay but would like to have rack on shell if option

Depends on the options. Mine was about $2,400 out the door - installed, pianted, wiring, 12v socket, dome light, fold-down front window, etc. I probably could have found a better deal online, or by driving a couple hundred miles, but I like to support local businesses in my small town.

I have been known to spend a couple hundred bucks more than I had to just to support local business (hell, the local govt doesn't even do that!). And I tell them so. And you know what? I get the best service possible and they are now offering me discounts and ideas. We are on a first name basis! Heh-heh! They even want me to display their logo and what-not.

I take a lot of pride in small town America - the real America!

The Problem with this Snugtop Rack System it compatibility with most brand names of racks (Thule, Yakima) you HAVE to buy adapters for their group of accesories (Bike, Kayak/Canoe, Cargo, etc.). It really looks nice but if you are going to really use it you might need a second tought. I have this setup, Leer cap with Thule Rack system and Cargo Basket.

    Regards.
