Depends. I used to do full changes every 5k but tire rotations every 10k.

Now I change the filter every 5 and a full oil change every 10.

There's more imitation in this industry than you might think. The 1st gen Tundra was styled a lot like the F150, the segment leader, both inside and out. Now Ford copies the styling of the midsize segment leader...

Think all the existing global Ranger T6 suspension upgrade bits will bolt in?

Except this basic front end design on the Ranger came out globally before the 3rd gen Tacoma. That being said I agree to some extent that all the global mid sized trucks, trucks designed more like half tons given the way they are used globally unlike the Tacoma, all look the same to North Americans because we aren’t used to the curved front ends. The Hilux, Ranger, Nivera, and Colorado all have that curved front end with a smallish grill. The biggest change I notice on the Ranger is the steel bumper on the front of the truck which I think is a first for the generation of mid sized trucks in North America.

The tank is 18 US gallons? That’s one thing I hadn’t caught yet. I’m Canadian so that’s about 70 L, which is about what my Tacoma (2nd gen) holds and works fine for the truck. What’s a 3rd gen Tacoma tank? It’s better than the 135ish L tank that comes on the F150 which makes you want to cry when you fill it with $1.39/L gas which has been the norm here up until the last few months. One thing that has us a little scared on a Diesel Canyon is the Diesel price. Over the two years Diesel here has been expensive, right now it’s almost 1.5x more to buy Diesel than regular. That eats up all the advantage of having a Diesel for DDing.

Or are you saying the tank is 18 gauge thickness? I have no idea either way lol.

18 gallon tank... That's cool I guess. It has little to no impact on my overall opinion though.

It’s quick math. Let’s say IRL both trucks average close to 20 mpgs which is fair for estimating. The Tacoma with 4 extra gallons, if that’s what the difference is, could go 80 miles farther on average per tank. The Ford would go 360 miles, or about 600 kilometres, without refueling. That’s just fine by me. I remember having a work GM half ton that got 8 mpg and had a 19 gallon tank lol, figure that out. The truck was a GMC 1500HD if anyone cares to look it up with the 6.0 L.

Two interesting things from the video are:

    1. That Ford claims you don’t need a WD hitch, which is horrible advice on a light truck.
    2. That a DCSB 3rd gen is only rated for 1000 lbs payload while the Ford is rated for 350 lbs more. That’s a big deal. As they alluded to, with 10% tongue weight on a 5000 lbs load a Tacoma has only 500 lbs of capacity for passengers, luggage, and gear making a family going camping with a trailer that weight nigh on impossible to stay within the payload rating. The Ford would leave 850 lbs for two adults, two kids, car seats, and luggage which is doable.

I tow a 3,500lb trailer with no trailer brakes. Your risk tolerance may vary.

Anyway, regardless, let's be real. I read that only 19% of mid-size truck buyers plan to ever tow anything over 3,000lbs. The vast majority of people who buy midsize trucks are fronting yuppies that want to pretend they are something they are not. The Tacoma is at the forefront of this buying a truck for image problem and is the main reason I didn't buy one. It's how you use your truck, not the height of your lift kit on your commute to the office, that makes it a real truck.

We own a 4,200 lbs (wet weight with all tanks full) TT that I used to tow with a second gen Tacoma and now tow with my work F150. I would never haul that thing without trailer brakes and a weight distributing hitch but you’re right, there are people who do, but that’s their business until something bad happens. I wouldn’t recommend to someone, especially someone new to towing, to run without at least a WD hitch and brakes if the trailer is properly equipped for them.

Whatever truck my wife and I get has to be a midsized since she hates full sized parking, has to be a full cab that can fit car seats easily with room for the items that come with kids, and must be capable of towing a 5,000 lbs all in weight trailer from time to time (she wants to get back into showing horses).

You bought a truck because you needed one, this is good.

I’ve worked in Agriculture most of my life. My Tacoma is now my weekend toy for the trails when I get time but it pulls double duty at work when I need to lend my wife the F150. I do agree that the mid sized trucks, especially the US/Canada only Tacoma, have really been designed for a different group than people who need a truck for work. That being said even a 2018 F150 is pretty tame compared to the first trucks I ever owned and I’m only in my 30s.

One nice thing about the GM twins and the Ranger is that they are both built off platforms that were designed for parts of the world that don’t use half tons for work, they use trucks like the Ranger, Hilux, Nivera, and Colorado for work. I’m not saying you can’t work a third gen Tacoma, but things like better payload come from improvements over the Tacoma like a fully boxed frame, improved rear leaf spring design (if you believe the video reviews), and four wheel disc brakes. Those are features Toyota has on the Hilux but not on the Tacoma because of the different target audience. Of course if you don’t use your truck for those work related purposes it’s completely irrelevant.

18 gallons US fuel tank for the Ranger. 2nd and 3rd Gen Tacoma 21 gallons US fuel tank. You say you want the Ranger to tow, that will be frequent fuel stops. I'm not a fan of the small tanks put into these midsizes. Hell, the 4Runner has a 23g tank. 1st Gen Tundra which is the same dimensions as the new midsizes had a 26.5g fuel tank.
