If you can find one with the 5 speed manual it's OK. Not the fastest but very reliable and there is ton's of run in the engine bay to wrench on it.

Resale is the same or higher actually. Better motor in every regard than the V6...except in power. Drive it and if it has enough juice for you...go for it. Its a bullet proof engine...ive got a 19 with the auto and think its pretty well powered truck. I cruise down the freeway at 85 with the cruise on...no problems. I 2 track with no problems...and i tow my boat with the atv in the bed...no problems.

What more do you want? If you need paint peeling performance...buy a 1/2 ton with a V8. I wanted off road maneuverability and performance and longevity. Hence...2.7

You have to push the long skinny pedal next to the brake a bit further towards the firewall. Other than that, it is great! Love the low rpm torque and it will scoot pretty good if you aren't afraid to push it. It is probably just me, but I actually think it sounds better than my 6 did.

Paid $25,500 for mine in November (brand new) and and when I refinanced it last week the credit union booked it at $30,000 so the resale should be stellar.

Have 1,800 miles on it and averaging 22 mpg (hand calculated, auto trans) which is better than my 6 cylinder ever got.

Both the 6 and 4 are thirsty, low powered engines compared to modern designs. If you think the constant hunting between gears (with auto) will bother you on the highway this isn't the truck for you. My 6 cylinder would down shift on the slightest interstate grade, and obviously my new 4 does it also.

    If I were actually going to haul or tow much I would get a 2.7 twin-turbo F150 w/hd payload package but I don't so I didn't.

The Tacoma is about the cheapest 4wd truck you can buy and I'm hoping any perceived performance shortcomings will be more than made up with superior reliability. That is the main reason I went the 2.7

I do all my own maintenance and the inline 4 is easy-peasy to work around

Hard to go wrong with any Tacoma, and if you don't bond with it after a year or two you will get most your money back.

I agree with this. I test drove one with the auto trans for about an hour. I thought it drove just fine. Had appropriate power for a midsize work truck. Not a speed demon or a torquey tuned diesel but just fine for what it is. For the record I am used to v8 trucks.

Im surprised Stungun hasn't felt a disturbance in the force and chimed in LOL

In all seriousness...both the 2.7 and V6 are NOT snappy. Id go for reliability...but its your money.

The 2.7 with a auto and 4x4 is the best truck you'll ever buy.

I'm not Stungun, but I approve this message.

My 2nd gen was a 2.7 5MT and worked very well but I can't see adding more weight and an AT to that and being happy so I went V6 again.
As for reliability, I haven't heard any bad things about Toyota's V6 in any of the gens (my 3.4 is over 200k no issues).

Find a manual trans. Otherwise I cannot vouch for your pleasure.

Is the 2.7 engine still built in Japan?

If you buy the v6 you will not wish you had bought the 4. The 4 will get you by unless you want to pull heavy loads or light loads up hills. I opted for the 6 when I retired a couple years ago and do have trailers.

The v6 makes roughly twice the power, and is rated at similar mileage.

The 4banger's purpose seems to be a lower point of purchase cost and little more.

Unless you're a fleet manager at Orkin or Ecolab there's no reason to even stop and look at an four banger SR.
