We had a 2nd gen at work that had a 6" drop bracket lift, "professionally" installed. Damned thing ate tires, had it aligned every other month. Sway bar attachment bolts were constantly breaking and nuts came off a few times. Couldn't take off the sway bar because rookies had to drive the truck occasionally. For all the bullshit involved in it's creation, the 6" "higher" truck couldn't go anywhere my stock 3rd gen couldn't. In fact, I drove my own stock 4wd 3rd gen many days just because driving that shimmying drop bracket dumpster truck was frickin exhausting.... Even the smallest bumps would jar your spine.

    But, hey. different strokes.....

Both opinions have valid points, 6" setups the way the come from most manufacturers are junk. Once you go custom leaf pack, and replace all spacers and blocks then your on the right track. Take this a step further with custom length coilovers, DB kits can wheel and there are a couple members that do push there setups hard.

I have a fabtech 6" and I do off-road. However for the cost it takes to make a 6" off-road worthy it's cheaper to go with a basic midtravel setup from the start. Keep in mind once you cut the frame, it is a major pain the ass to go back, and no you can not run off the shelf skidplates either. Everything for 6" has to be custom if you want it to work right for the most part. BDS is probably the best off the shelf kit.

Look at @Glueman for a built 6" setup. I will be following his lead shortly and doing a very similar setup

    modified drop bracket off-road

So when a dude wants to mod out his sports car, if he's not building it to race in the Indie 500 then he's building it wrong? Lol. I think this guy just wants to lift his truck and wants info on a 6" lift... at least that's what it seems like

You should totally cut your truck open to lift it, bro.

People act like adding a drop bracket renders a truck unusable off pavement when majority of TW users, who are a minority of Tacoma owners, probably don’t see much more than dirt roads. Even most of what the ExpedOverland guys and similar do could be done by a stock Taco, sometimes even a Prius.

To me the biggest draw is a near irreversible frame cut. And some guys in one of those cab mount pissing matches we’re bringing up interesting opinions on welding high strength steel frames. That’s a major drawback for what usually amounts to a $2k+ lift (for a quality kit) that typically only includes massive blocks for the rear.

Isn't a high performance coilovers full kit setup like $5k?

I see some advice in that post that let's him know that some parts will not work with that type of lift . It was to inform him in case he was going that route of a compatibility issue of aftermarket support if he meant to wheel it. He was asking for advice. Were we all just supposed to say go ahead? He is asking opinions to see pros and cons.

Yeah if you add it all up, if you want to upgrade the shocks and get an actual rear leaf setup and whatnot it’s going to hit $3.5k easy depending on what kit. That’s just for the kit alone, not factoring wheels and tires and install.

I’m pretty sure the Victory 4x4 Guy is running a 6” BDS kit on his truck and it looks like he rally uses it!

Yep this is that one guy that actually wheels with a bracket setup. I wonder what hes done in addition to the kit.

Center body clearance is drastically improved and if you go with a coilovers setup on a bracket lift you gain as much front axle clearance as a 3" lift

This is false... ask @state48overland this. I thought the same and I'm actually higher than he is and will be higher once my kings go in. Not saying DB lifts don't have their flaws though.

That's why I never get why there bought. When I moved from so cal to ga I saw all the 10" lifted full sized trucks and thought wow where can you actually go with that?
It's hard to fit under the trees with what I've got in tight forest trails or on my property .

No. He literally said he had one question and that was if the frame needed to be cut. He didn't ask for any opinions...
