Always has cool stuff. From refurbished to brand new. They'll fit you for a bike. They do pit crew for a bunch of pro riders.

Forsure buy from a local shop, dont order online. I rode BMX for many years(edit: BMX consumed my life, i LIVED bicycles for about a decade), sponsors/team roadtrips/you name it, used to work at a bike shop in downtown livermore, we made sure to always take care of those who brought in bikes bought from us. It will of course come down to the employees at the actual location, but buying local is always going to be better than mail order.

I used to ride Bridgestone for all road bikes. Had a Schwinn mountain bike that had xr350 brake levers on and bars off a trials bike. Used to crash a lot.

I currently work at a bike shop, it’s been my job from through high school and college.
I’d stay away from Schwinn, the quality hasn’t been there for years.
What kind of riding are you trying to do? More long distance stuff? Group rides?
What’s your fitness level? Injuries? Flexible?

Not so much, had to get a full time job. "Professional" BMX guys dont make alot of money, basically had the options of living a permanent college lifestyle (sharing a bmx house with other bmx riders, no retirement, no insurance, no way i could afford a truck or expensive anything that wasnt given to me for free by sponsors). To continue to ride at that level, without riding all day everyday to keep up meant id just hurt myself lol

So i pretty much gave it all up to get a normal-ish job that made good money, bought a truck, bought some guns, got fat, now im here

That one's dope. I'd make a b&w print and frame it.

Alright alright ya guys got me. But if I walk into a shop and the first thing workers do is scramble then I’m leaving.

Whatever the pros suggest I guess. No idea what my friend has planned but I assume it’ll just be the two of us due to me not getting along with anyone but him. Probably just for health and fitness. Injuries none. But I do get carpal tunnel in my right hand. My friend on the other hand is a bit more fit so I’d prefer a lighter frame so I can at least attempt to keep up.

    I’m like 5’3” 118 last I checked. Haven’t worked out in a decade.

Pretty much every company makes an endurance styled bike and a more aggressive styled bike. Both road bikes, but the geometry of each is catered to what you want to achieve out of it. If you’re just looking to get out and ride, while being relatively comfortable, you might want to look at endurance styled bikes. If you guys are pretty competitive and you have a good fitness level, or are relatively flexible, think aggressive styled bike.

You local shop will carry a variety of brands (unless they carry trek-trek likes their dealers to only carry trek). My shop deals with Specialized, Giant, BMC, Cannondale, Cervelo, and Pinarello for road bikes. Have any specific questions on any of their models, let me know and I’ll answer them as best I can.

Most year end bikes are already sold out but at your height, you might get pretty lucky and find something in your size.

When looking at prices, it’s vaired based on frame material, component level (gearing), and brakes. Sure other things have a factor in it but those are the main things. Frame material is almost always carbon or aluminum. Carbon is lighter, stiffer, and a better dampening material but is more expensive. Component level means how many gears you have and how nice they are. For most mid level bikes, companies use Shimano components. The more you pay for your bike, the more gears you have and the lighter it is. There’s electronic shifting too, but for a first bike, I’m guessing you’re staying away from that. Shimano has 3 drivetrains that are 11 speed. 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace, in that order of price and weight. This is also talking about rear only, almost every road bike will have 2 chain rings up front. Besides that, there’s a 10 speed rear (Tiagra) and 9, 8, etc.

Brakes are pretty simple to explain. You’ll either have rim brakes or disc brakes. Within disc brakes, there’s hydraulic (sort of like a car) and mechanical or cable actuated. I come from the mountain bike world where disc brakes are standard, so I’m partial to that but it depends on the type of riding you’re doing. Hilly, flat? Want to keep it as light as possible? Most endurance bikes come standard with disc brakes now, and aggressive geometry bikes give you the choice (with some exceptions).

Saw you mentioned $1,500 earlier so it’ll most likely be aluminum with a carbon fork. You can get disc brakes at this price point (if desired) and you’ll see either a 10 or 11 speed rear derrailleur.

Think that covers a good bit but if you have any questions, shoot.

One thing to note is my friend is a speed junkie. Every chance he gets he’ll open it up and try to lose me.

I’ve got the gist of most of the components so far. I’ve seen ultegra stuff and all that. Brakes I’m probably fine with either really. Also open to just upgrading later on.

There anything that can ease the right hand fatigue? (Yes...I know.) I’ll gladly pay more for that.

With components, you can upgrade. Not so easy if you decide to go to disc from rim though. Bike won’t have mounts for it.

And as far as hand fatigue, there’s padding you can put under your handle bar tape that can make it softer or more ergonomic. Also make sure you get fit by a certified fitter and let them know before hand.
