Eh I don't think this is a venturi tube. Why? Because there's nothing sensing the pressure drop where it tapers down. The whole concept of a venturi requires 3 "orifices": an inlet, an outlet, and at least one tap for another fluid or pressure sensor. Generally, it's bad practice to go from a large diameter, to smaller, and then back up to large for a given fluid flow path. It's called necking, and induces plumbing losses.

Having said that, I have no idea what this piece does and the only people who do are probably fluid dynamicists for Toyota or their supplier. Molds aren't cheap, toyota wouldn't spend the extra money for no reason. Just my $.02

Im not suggesting it's a sensor. I agree with you on that. Venturis (meaning the parabolic, constricted portion of the tube) still have an effect on the nature of the flow through them regardless. They can act as a form of pressure regulator, or to smooth out the interruptions in flow caused by turbulence.

There appears to be some purposeful engineering to the plastic part, so I highly doubt the goal was simply to choke off airflow and decrease gas mileage.

Perhaps it's a De Laval nozzle? In that case the "rocket power" was removed from this taco. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Laval_nozzle

No. Edited to reflect that the elbow piece did not go back in. My bad.

A few listed in the signature
Not going to lie I just installed one and actually like it. Dresses up the engine bay a little bit and makes some nice noises. Not obnoxious though; the wife hasn't figured it out yet and we were in it for an hour today.

The resonator is still there on the trd intake. It's just smaller than the OEM intake resonator.

Has it been determined what the purpose of this part is? Mine came loose while I was adding the rubber intake accelerator.

If it has value, I’m inclined to leave it in but I haven’t found any info on it yet.

Any more updates or info on the benefits or problems removing this piece?

Removed two years ago. No issues or decreased mpg’s.

Ugh, I just installed my TRD intake and would have removed this too. Oh well. I have another TRD tube with resonator incoming. I plan to cut away the resonator and give that a run. In my opinion the TRD intake is too quiet. My previous Jeep Wrangler had a K&N intake and wow, that made some noise.

BTW, for the OP (as this discussion has gotten a bit off topic) I have not noticed any clicking sound from the TRD intake.

I removed this part from both of our vehicles. 16 4runner and 18 Taco.
    Noticed ZERO difference in either

Thanks for the feedback! Had the same experience with removing the charcoal filter. Won’t put in the effort to remove this part.
