Factory fog load limits

As an attempt to keep everything as clean as I can until I get a switch pro I came up with a thought. Can the factory fog switch handle led fogs, a 20” light bar and ditch lights all at the same time? I know it’s not ideal but for $25 I figured it may be a short term solution that I can re use the parts later or so. They come with harnesses and switches so again, more of a keep things clean solution for now.

Check the fuse rating of the circuit. The stock TRD fogs are 55w, or 110w for the circuit. I suspect non-TRD and TRD trucks run the same circuit, though the non-TRD trucks come with lower output bulbs.

Watts = 12v x Amps

Add up the wattage of everything you are trying to run and compare it to the circuit ratting. Chances are the 20" lightbar is somewhere near 120w, which alone is over the stock circuit load on the fogs.

Edit: You should also consider a light bar and ditch lights will blind you in fog. The inability to run your fogs independently really negates the entire purpose of a fog light, assuming you are running real SAE fogs with cut offs.

 

That’s what I was looking for. Perfect thank you. That’s a bummer but I’ll figure something out. Based on that I’ll only have to run 1 harness for the light bar. All 4 pods should be about 80w.

 

It certainly can if you wire it with relays and pull the real power from the battery.

 

Right, if you use the fog circuit as the switch but not the power source, and use relays off the fog circuit to pull power independently from the battery, you can certainly accomplish activating everything with the OEM switch.

I realize and it is a good point, I was just elaborating a bit for the OP.

 

Agreed, no problem to run a relay - just not very useful as fogs only work with low beam and shut off with high beams.

What do your switches look like? Do you have any dummy blocks in the dash?

 

I have ch4x4 switches for everything except the fogs. And both the light bar and ditch lights have a complete plug and play harness. I was just trying to avoid having a bunch of wires coming off the battery for now since the winch will need to get wired as well. I may wire them up with the harness or I’ll just leave them until I get the switch pro. I have a paranoid fab mount with the stuff to go that route in the garage too. I spent a lot of time looking at how other people have done things and just snow balling on how to tame my OCD with their already great ideas. The big thing for me is cleanliness as well as trying to avoid permanent alterations. OCD at its best...

 

I used CH4x4 switches for each set of my Squadrons. Used an add-a-fuse on the Highbeam fuse to trigger the relays.
