With that app you have download the maps of the area where you are going,,I use it along with google earth when planning a trip. Sometimes roads that are not on the app but you can see on google earth or the other way around

Yeah I just looked at that, noticed it doesn’t have most of the Ardbeg trail. I love Gaia because it usually displays 90% of trails in the Canadian Topo map overlay, but I’ll have to pay if I want to download the maps.

    Re: CB vs Ham
Just trying to improve upon the wave & shout method. Works fine for me on short outings, but after a weekend of swarming bugs and/or very hard rain, I’m much less willing to roll down the window to give rushed hand signals.

Don’t want to invest in old technology, or obsolete systems amongst the crowd.

My true purpose is to chirp others and get in on the banter. Did a 2-day trip with one other truck that had a co-pilot, no comms. Being able to chirp at my buddy woulda enhanced the trip for sure.

2 way is probably the best. Also, with most radios you get two so if you do have a co-pilot you can have communication if the need arises for them to spot you.

Also with 2-ways my girlfriend and I can keep communications if I have to explore ahead on foot. She likes to check in to make sure I didn't get taken by some murderer.....shes a tad paranoid.

Two way would be your best bet, out of 30+ members here only 2-3 people will have HAM in the future and another 2-3 people will have proper CB setup. 2 way does not require you to have any setup/tuning and works within driving range that we do. If you want to talk with somebody who is few kms ahead, then it's a different game, but it's a super rare case.

Only reason Ham radio stands out for me is because you can get on the UHF and the Gmrs (two way) frequency. So its kind of a two for one system. Mind you I would be having the CB, HAM, and still have my two way radios as well..Kind of redundant. But during the swisha trip my handhelds were driving me bonkers because they kept dying.

    had to google the differences
    https://www.shocksurplus.com/pages/bilstein-6112-or-5100-shocks-know-before-you-buy

I say with the 866's the beefier shock could be ideal. However, the 5100's will get the job done and the $300 could be used towards other things.....Like a rear bumper or some other shenanigans

You can also tune to the same frequency as gmrs so you'd actually be communicating with gmrs
