Custom Bed Rack Build

If anyone is interested in a much shorter version of one of my bed racks here is an example of one made for @nfidel He asked for one to be shorter and I was able to deliver. His was without the tire mount. With it being his short I figured if a tire was to still be mounted underneath it would only be inside the bed a couple inches. Still leaving plenty of room for gear. I’m real happy with how it came out.

 

I’m stoked on this rack! They don’t call him @DrWeld for nothing! He definitely takes pride in his work and this is much better than a mass produced rack- it’s exactly how I wanted it. Photo dump coming.....

why move the spare tire there?
moving weight from down low on the truck to up high desn't do anything positive in any situation, and for the rare occurrences that you get a flat it's not that difficult to get the tire out from underneath. I've always wondered why people do this, what am I missing?

 

Bigger tires possibly wont fit underneath. Just my thoughts.

 

Yea I was thinking that too, but I believe even a slightly bigger tire fits under the truck.
Even then you'd be better to mount it standing a the front of the bed.

I'm thinking it's really just for looks though..

 

Yeah I think a part of it is looks.
Trophy trucks do it, so why not us! Haha

Nice work, top notch and looks awesome.

A quick question, can you make bed cap rails like these in the picture with 1/8” bare steel for a 3rd Gen 6’ bed?

They would be easy to ship and I’d buy them if reasonable and I know others would. Just want to replace the stock plastic ones.

Note, the other vendor making these doesn’t do any for 3rd Gen or 6’ beds, actually they stopped making them.

There are several reasons why tires are moved from out from under the bed. Like one that was stated is bigger tires and even a slightly bigger tire will barely fit there. Two for easier access to the tire. Granted it’s not that bad to get to from under the truck but in my case it’s even easier and like the ones on the swingouts those are supper simple. Another one is now I’m able to carry two spare tire if I wanted to. And also it looks so cool. HaHaHa

It was on the Bilstein truck at the OR expo in CA a few months back. Looked so damn close to my design it’s not funny.

 

That's too bad. However, there isn't a whole lot of potential for a difference in design or whatever you want to call it when dealing with racks made from conduit so it's possible that two minds thought alike!
