Deceleration clunk/surge...TSB?

So my 2017 is occasionally surging and clunking under deceleration (sort of like a bump from behind by another vehicle). I remember this being discussed, but I could not find the thread. Does anyone know if there is a TSB for this condition?

 

Was your gas tank partially full when you experienced this?

sounds like something I've noticed on a 2018 pro. In my case it feels more like the transmission downshifting into first.

Nope. Full tank.

 

For context, I've occasionally had the "bump from behind by another vehicle" clunk, but usually right after I reach a complete stop. Always thought it was axle wrap or gas tank shift.

I don't have the bipolar slushbox.

 

Missing lubrication on the driveshaft splines can cause this . Very very common problem with new trucks .

Same thing with FJ cruisers. I call it the bump stop. You’d swear someone tapped your rearend at a stoplight.
My ‘08 did it most of the time. Greased driveline and flushed tranny. Still does it. My ‘12 FJ has never done it..

 

How did you lubricate your splines on the slip yoke ?

What type of lubricant did you use to grease the splines ?

 

My FJ does it too. Sometimes right after I grease the driveshaft it goes away for a bit.

There was a TSB out for the early FJs, but I was over mileage when I tried to get it fixed. I just live with it.

 

If I recall it was LuberPlate (sp) brand. Waterproof grease. White colored stuff.
Used it on trailer bearings as well

 

The lubricant on your driveshaft splines is expensive stuff . If you lube your splines up with grease , it will last for 2 days and simply get pushed off the splines .
When you purchased your truck from the factory , Toyota didnt use enough of the expensive lubricant on the driveshaft splines and as a result , a lot of members here continue to experience this issue .
There are 3 products listed at the bottom of my low fluid thread . Try some on your splines and report back

I’ll pick some up to have on hand and lube-up the Fj

 

Hahahaha , Ford lube is the cheapest out of the bunch lol but if it works , use it .
Spicer still has the contract for making the driveshafts in the Tacoma , Ford , Dodge and General Motors .
When Toyota assembled your truck , they were a little shy on the expensive lube for the splines

 

Have we figured out what’s causing this? Is it the drive shaft? Mine does it every once in a while. The dealership “cannot duplicate”

 

I've taken my 2018 2wd in for this 4 times. Times 2-4 they tell me it's supposed to do what mine is doing.
