Is there anyone with an aftermarket turbo using an automatic transmission? I read some comments about the URD supercharger not doing well with the 4 speed auto (A340).

I think a valve body, external cooler, and torque converter upgrade are your typical strength mods for it.

I had the urd supercharger for a short time and am going turbo now. I had a lazy shift between 1st and 2nd occasional. To fix it I'm doing a transgo reprogram kit. Just haven't yet since im currently not on boost .

I am, transgo valve body mods and 303k miles. Super stout trans. Even more fun with a restalled converter.

\I would pay big money for somebody to tune the trans ECU. I manually shift gears half the time especially in the half to 3/4 throttle range. It just wants to get to 4th as quick as possible.

Did you go with the truck or hot rod setting and what do you mean by reinstalled converter?

I found a drill bit of my own that was in between hot rod and truck for the 1-2. I did hot rod everything else. My first turbo 4runner I used the truck setting and it could be driven in such a way you didn't know the trans was modded. But when you were WOT it definitely banged. I did my current Tacoma a little more aggressively. There's definitely a firm 1-2 shift but it's not bad at all. I don't think my wife would even know anything's different. Still bangs the gears nicely in WOT.

I sent my converter off to Great Converters in Texas. They split your converter open and modify the internals to give you more stall speed, and then weld it back up. $350 plus shipping. On my 4runner they were able to restall the factory converter to ~2,800. Factory is around 2,200. You stilll get to keep TC lockup too. It made a HUGE improvement in the heavy 5200lb 4x4 4runner. That thing had a rear mount turbo and it didn't spool as well, so the converter helped be able to build boost off the foot brake. My Tacoma has no problem spooling 4-5lb on the factory converter. And it only weighs 3580. I'd still like to get a converter one day but I'll wait until I have to pull the engine or trans for something else.

Thanks for the info I was thinking hot rod for 1-2 and truck for the rest.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
I am. The 1st gen auto trans is more stout than the manual (the 5 speed tends to blow up the 3rd gear). Its very similar to the Turbo Supra Auto transmission and can handle decent power with a shift kit.

The issue is your transmission is usually designed for a gradual and smooth shift for driver comfort. This can cause the clutch packs in your transmission to slip and overheat if you are making more power than originally designed for. The shift kit will increase shifting pressure so shifts will be much quicker and hit a bit harder (depends on how aggressive the shift kit is designed) which should help the transmission not overheat under hard acceleration and reduce wear and tear on the clutch pack.

Some of the 1st gens have a lever on the transmission (Driver side, check yours) that runs up to your throttle body via a throttle cable. As the gas is pressed and the throttle body opens, the lever opens up and increases shift pressure in the trans. A poor mans "shift kit" is to pull the cable through and tie it off so the transmission lever is always "pulled" to max pressure.
