type of grease for u joint?

What type of grease is needed for my u joint? I need to get some and can't seem to find the info anywhere in my searches

 

It doesn't really matter.

You want a grease suitable for wheel bearing use, IE: high temperature/high pressure. Lots of greases meet that criteria. The most important thing is just to do it. I do mine every oil change.

 

I use multi-purpose grease. I have to take the shield off the front to grease the 4wd u-joints. Kind of a pain in the arse, but necessary.

 

It can be done without removing anything, it’s a pain while figuring out though.

 

Use just about any NLGI 2 grease

 

Lucas Red and Tacky is what several people on here told me to use when I asked this question, So that's what I am using.

Do not use Mobil 1 grease. It separates and runs everywhere.

I use Red N Tacky too. I have some good Fuch's grease that I use for various things but I only to dip a finger load out of the tube, manually. It's some good high pressure, high resistance to water wash out, etc. Used to use it on all the serviceable bearings on my dirt bikes.
You really can use just about any decent cartridge grease. Just do it often.

 

Go to your local auto parts store or Wal-mart and grab the first tube of grease that says NLGI 2 and you will be fine. If buying the most expensive makes you feel all warm and fuzzy get that, but it really isn't necessary.

Any grease carrying the NLGI #2 rating should work. If you want to get into it a bit more, there are different types of grease that interact with each other in different ways. The most common is lithium complex (lucas red n tacky) so anything that is compatible with that is a good bet. This pdf has a good compatibility chart:

I chose to use their Marine grease because it isnt supposed to separate and drip red oil all over your shop like the more generic stuff does.

Key is just keeping fresh grease in em. 8-10 pumps every oil change on the rear shaft's 3 joints. and every other oil change on the front joints.
