My last response as a keto apologist:

I don't think you're properly accounting for the difference in people's metabolisms. Even when I was 18-22, I would gain weight if I ate junk food. I weighed 220, worked out 3-4x a week and played Rugby, practicing 3x a week and had games on Saturdays. Even with that level of activity, if I ate poorly, I would gain weight, and quickly.

What may work for you may not work for everyone.

@Newlife and I always chuckle at the bolded comment.

I spoke with a few experienced guys on it and they said some people have to get LOW to trigger ketosis.
Now once you did it typically made it easier to stay there and you could increase your carbs a bit slowly and you’d be OK.
They didn’t seem to find it hard to believe I was struggling as they said most lean and athetic people struggle more with it initially.

I don’t doubt the diet works I just was not willing to do what it took.
I tried keto because I felt it would be easier than counting cals and macros. Well it was more tedious and frustrating for me.

Also my favorite thing in life is beer. Make it too hard for me to see benefits from giving up my brews and I’m out.

Keto/carnivore here for 10 months, lifting 5-7 days a week a year prior to keto and haven’t changed my lifting during keto. Still making steady gains and that is much more obvious being lean now (not just water bulk).

230lbs pre keto, 183 @ 10% body fat pretty steady now for a few months.

I went into it thinking I’d do it for a month or 2... here we are almost a year later and honestly I can’t see going back to any other way of eating. The cognitive benefits + level energy throughout the day, are the 2 biggest factors but low inflammation and fast recovery are a big bonus as well.

Everyone is different and you have to figure out your carb tolerances, but you do have to do it long enough to fully become fat adapted, I no longer track macros, I eat carbs when I feel like I need some or simply want some, but I think being primarily a fat burner as your base is just so much more beneficial than the other way around.

At first gym performance took a hit but after a month or 2 it honestly made no difference, I typically workout fasted in the AM as well.

It is great for weight loss but frankly I think that the benefits of this way of eating are far beyond just a quick weight loss tool, so while it’s nice to see it gaining popularity I still think most people don’t learn of all the other reasons it’s so beneficial to health.

Depending on how much the bug surpresses your appetite, you might lose weight that way. I’m on the mend from a nasty bug and I ended up losing 3lbs. So now I’m around 197

Have you worked with a nutritionist and logged all your meals everyday? My questions would be:

-how strict you are following an eating plan
-how much cardio are you doing
-have you changed up your routine during your gym career
    -what is your diet/eating schedule
-as well as what is your age.

I was wanting to cut 20 lbs after a bulk and I barely made any progress for months and months until the last bit, until I really adhered 100% to the eating plan. I logged my meals for about 6 mos straight, never missed a day. It’s all calories in/calories out, and obviously metabolic issues can drastically slow the progress.

I lost 5 lbs the day i got sick. I still don’t have an appetite at all but I’m making myself eat anyway.

As far as Keto, I was my leanest when i was doing Keto and felt better than I’ve ever felt.

Chest genetics aren't there, sorry mate. Tough to see here but my chest is definitely there when flexed right. In that photo it's tough to flex.

What’s up nerds! Long time no talk! Quick question! I have been tracking calories to lose weight (from 225 to lean/healthy, whatever that may be). MFP has me at 2400 calories per day for 2lbs per week. I thought this would be hard but I am low on calories everyday. I tend to eat 400-500 for breakfast, 600 ish for lunch and 600-800 for dinner. With snacks I tend to be around 2k per day. Factor in daily dog walks/runs and lifting and I am at a pretty steep deficit. I started tracking around late December/Jan 1st and have dropped from 222lbs to 213.

Do I need to eat more? I feel fine (great actually), eat good Whole Foods, we cook most our meals from cooking light recipes. I know losing weight super fast isn’t good, and my goal is to get healthier, not be skinny and unhealthy. I’m not in a race to drop weight, I am just trying to give my heart the best chance to live past 50 haha.

If your goals are to maintain muscle mass, aim to lose no more than 2lbs per week.

I don't use MFP or any other calculator to tell me how many calories I burn a day. Virtually no calculator will be accurate. If you don't have a baseline just determine how many lbs per week you have been losing at 2400. If you are losing 3lbs per week then you need to up your calories by 500 per day to lose 2lbs per week.

Also keep your protein up to preserve mass.

Hey guys. Looking to expand my garage gym with some dumbbells finally. I'm debating between either the PowerBlocks or the Bowflex adjustable sets. Anyone have experience with either or preferably both? Looking for opinions.

I like the PowerBlocks because they're square and make pushup rows easier and more stable, however I've used them before and adjusting the weight is a bit of a pain sometimes. I've never used or seen the Bowflex ones but my girlfriend has them at her work and says they're easily adjustable and pretty solid. Price difference is only $20 so that's not a factor. PowerBlock does have a 10 year warranty over Bowflex 2 year warranty which I also like.

I just don't really see myself needing more than 50. I don't think I've ever even used bigger than a 50lb dumbbell. I'm also super scrawny though and I'm not really lifting to get big and bulky. But, if I am spending the money, I think I might as well just spend the extra 45 now and have the ability to expand to 70 or 90 pounds should I ever need it
