Hondo Garage's New Thing

I'll add one in Canada (I'm hurt I was left out) that has had zero water intrusion, has been all over the west coast, desert, BC, and Alberta. Currently sitting and -30 here in Northern Ab, and the dog and I are like yeah no way the buddy heater is going to keep up in those temps.

might need a bit more hose/ducting, depending on where you install the unit, but the best place i have found to run it out is via the driver side cubby. My only other concern is power draw when running. MY secondary battery is only a 50ah battery, AGM at that, so I really only have abut 20ah of useable power. Electrical upgrades are in order and will probably be a lithium battery in the rear and run all the eletrical from there and lighten up the front a wee bit.

 

I know, that is why I bought it. I was going to stick it in an enclosure anyways, saw this and was like well screw it they already built me one. Originally was going to get propex, but being out snow shoeing with the dog the other day and it was -30, we were both like wtf are we doing out here the damn heater wouldn't work well in those temps with propane. which is why I went with the diesel heater.

Need to find myself a 1/4" alum/steel plate or maybe slightly thinner, to make it easier to work with, cut it to size, remove the cubby insert, and mount it flush up against the cubby. Seal with some gasket maker, then run the fresh air ducting an exhaust through two holes cut into the plate and down and out. Fresh air to the front of the truck, exhaust to the rear.

As long as you mount the AIW unit in the interior of your living space, you only need one duct.

If you use the hose on the return, then hot air will just come out and blow everywhere from the front. if you use the hose on the output, then the return will pull air from all their from the crevices etc.

I do think it's a little bit bulky though. Also the dosing pump mount for the AIW unit sucks because it makes the entire unit resonate w/ that clicking sound.

And while I am on here typing away, I want to let anyone know who is reading this that I first started thinking about selling my spot because of all the douchebaggery and bitching on this thread. And as the GIRL on this thread who DOES wheel and DOES build her truck and CAMPS in the back under her Softopper ALONE, a lot of you sound really effin' pathetic. And quite frankly I would rather keep sleeping under that topper on my adventures than be part of a small group of people with GFCs that likes to argue, put people down, and type away at their computers fighting instead of getting outdoors.

Be supportive. Remember there is more than one way to skin a damn cat. Stick to talking about the GFC.

 

While you know I love you, not sure selling your spot is gonna fix much. You won’t have a camper and our Douchebaggery will surely continue.

Anyone consider a Vs. thread? This thread used to be people who have or want a GFC. Now it’s full of Drifter owners justifying there decision and GFC owners doing the same. Anyone care to start it out? Specs prices, the good, the bad the ugly. No holds bar, anyone?

 

The way the heater works is that cold air goes in from the return in the back and hot air comes out in the front, the design, while similar to the Propex, is slightly different. Generally people put ducting on the front outlet only because if you stow the heater inside a cabin, usually it's among cabinetry to reduce noise and also because it's unsightly and not something you typically interact with like furniture, a stove, or your bowl of apple raisin oatmeal. Since hot air rises, people generally just have the vent output on the floor.

Also, the ducting, it's expandable. It might not be initially clear in the photograph.



you can pull it out so it extends roughly another ~50%. TBH, in my setup, the cabinet is open in the back for the return, and the front will be connected via a soffit vent.

No, I don’t know. It was just a (hopeful) guess.

Someone named Karen has been replying to emails. She’s very helpful and responsive. We are currently coordinating my pickup. If all goes well, I’ll be heading to Bozeman Thursday night for a Friday afternoon pickup! But if there are any delays, it may be a month or two before I have a chance to make the 11+ hour drive.... fingers crossed!

I too am interested in purchasing someone's spot as I'm ready to pull the GFC trigger but don't want to wait (as long as just making a new reservation) if there's another option...

 

Why bother, they are both good options can’t we all get along? I’m here to share ideas and will gladly have a beer, wine, scotch, tequilla shot, whatever around a propane campfire.

 

From all the ones I have been around and installeD in work trucks, when the pump Is mounted properly in a rubber bushing they are fairly quiet. It may be annoying, who knows, I’ve yet to see a review on one of these ones yet.

Bulky? Not really, everything is contained in one box, i think its quite small tbh. It’ll only be installled for winter use then removed. A propex with all the tubing, tank/etc is the same size granted this is an extra fuel source. I’ll report back when I find out.

 

4 outlets, the intake Is always in the rear. They made it four so you can have mulitple feed to different vents. Pointless in a truck. Camper sure.
