Around 50. So 22 years left, but I'll end up just working part time anyways to fund my hunting/fishing gear.

I’m 24, i put the max matched amount 5% into my company 401k, I also bought a 2 family house a year ago. Then i deposit a few extra hundred or so into multiple investment accounts when I can each month. I would add more to a 401k or even a post tax roth but honestly I’m looking to buy another multi family or two before 30 so by the time I’m 55 they are payed off and generating income. Currently i get 1150 a month for one unit so ~6900 a monthx whatever the rent inflation is. I will also be adding whatever percentage my raise is to my 401k or other type of savings every other year this was a neat trick my uncle explained to me as a way to increase savings without having a chance to “miss” it.

Will retire at 39. I have my military retirement coming. I'm sure I'll get another job though just so I don't go crazy with boredom.

Victim of a mis spent youth. I will retire 3 days before my funeral. I had fun and saw a lot cool things, no regrets. Actually I’m planning on 66.5, not going to be able to see the world but will see a lot more of the US.

Early retirement is nice if you have useful things to do to fill your time. I've been at it 7 years now. Still have more to do than time to do it, and haven't tapped any savings yet.

Many of the things you dream of at 30 you will not be able to do physically at 60. Or even care about anymore. So always keep an eye out for new interests.

Keep learning, keep helping other people, keep enjoying what you have and not fretting over what you don't have. Those will make both current and future life better.

Being prepared financially for retirement gets tougher all the time. Starting early and living below your means is critical to success for all but the trust fund babies, the stray entrepreneur and an occasional lottery winner.

But Joe Average in the US can do pretty well with some effort, planning and hard work (which scares too many people).

As the agent who booked our last trip said, "Man, you're living my dream".

    This.

I always nagged my parents to go traveling like they wanted to. Granted with 2 kids it wasn't easy, but as we got older I told them to start doing for themselves. Not an option now realistically as Mom is on dialysis

I started contributing to an IRA at about age 20. Contribution limits were lower back then and given the bubble bursts that happened not too long after in the end that money was of little consequence in the grand scheme of things but it established the habit.

Once I had more consistent access to a 401k with higher contribution limits around age 26 was when the saving really started. My now wife, back then girlfriend, had a similar savings profile with 401k access starting a few years later than me.

Honestly it is never too early nor ever too late to start saving though! I think it really depends on the situation as to when one can practically start saving meaningfully but as soon as you actually can you really should.

    I started at 25. I believe that was 1996.

I've maxed out every year except for 4.

Even with the shitty year this year, I still am on course for 5 years from now. If the company down sizes, I'm okay with going at any time.

I figure my 401 k took a 70k hit and I really don't care. Of course I would rather it increase, but I'm still way ahead and feel fairly comfortable.

I'm 27, didn't start putting in towards my 401k till last year around March or April started new job in January and past jobs didn't offer benefits, but did pay exceptionally.

Since I started so late I was heavily investing in my Roth 401k playing catch up meaning in this year I was set on hitting the 18,500 limit all Roth.

Well I lowered my 401k investment amount tremendously to build up what I have readily available on hand. (I didn't cut off contributions completely)

I too am saving up for possible investment properties.

I retired at seventy, it lasted three months and was working again. I slowed down by about half or more but I could not stand my lack of productivity. I was always my own boss or rather my clients were - it hasn't changed.
Anyone who retires, don't do it in January is you live where the weather is bad in the winter, wait until you can be outside every day.

I plan to retire in eight years at age 62 with 30 years in with the City of Los Angels Department of Water and Power. It's a fantastic job and employer. I could have done much worse.

This is my biggest fear. I hope to move on to some sort of home business or side gig.
