Is Fusion's $9.99 Toyota add-on worth purchasing? I'd really like to ditch the Engine Power gauge on the screen below and replace it with something that indicates what gear my Auto Transmission is in at any given time, but I can't seem to find anything like that in the options. There appears to be a setting called "Trasmission Actual Gear Status," but that option goes away after pairing with the truck. Is it part of that Toyota add-on?

(I don't want to hijack this thread with a bunch of ODB sensor talk; so, if anyone knows the solution or has feedback on the add-on purchase, please send me a PM with that info).

BTW, this is my idle screen with 1.05 93. When the heater is OFF and the engine has warmed up, my rpm's stay between 595-605, which is pretty fantastic. :)

I replied to the original email that had the 1.05 files to request the updated files for idle surge. Should I have opened up a new ticket? I’m not gonna open a new ticket for now so I don’t have multiple requests in unless I need to.

    Thanks.
    Definitely enjoying 1.05 so far.

Not necessary, if you have submitted a ticket we will get to you as quickly as we can.
Right now everything is going smoothly getting people updated but please understand, for the people who are mentioning how long their tickets have been sitting idle, we have about 4 pages of tickets left + shipping out the rest of the orders from over the holidays. So we are going as fast as we can.

Sorry; I didn't see an answer to this one, this is what I'd also like to know.

? On the handhelds, am I correct that they will be preloaded with preferred tune or tunes, but cannot have future updates unless sent back to Ovtune? So somewhat limited? Sorry if this has been answered already. Thanks. :crapstorm:

Tunes are loaded to the handheld via a laptop. They can also be changed out for different tunes after the fact, using said laptop. As for if they will come pre-loaded, I have no idea, but it doesn't seem far fetched because some people ordering the handheld will be doing so since they do not have a laptop.

Mat also mentioned the handheld holds up to 5 tunes at once.

The handhelds would come pre-loaded with the current tune (1.05) + stock tune. If you then want custom tunes or an update, you'd have to connect it to a computer to load those.

I searched on OVtune posts in this thread only that contained "handheld" and this was the second result...

    Hi guys,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have both the tune and 4.88s, and I've experimented with a few different tire/tune combos. Here is the order in which I did things, and my impressions of each setup. A couple things to bear in mind:
    - I live in the mountains of southwest VA, so if you're in a flat locale, your results may be different.
    - I've got an 18 that had all the latest TSBs as of September 2018. If you've got an older/newer model with different ECU/TCU versions, YMMV.
    - I have no bumper, armor or other weigh-adding mods. Other than the 64lb 33s, and about 100 lbs of tools in the back, I run at factory weight.
    - Some of this is subjective, and you know what they say about opinions.

First I installed a 2in Eibach lift and 33s. With the factory tune, this killed the truck's power. I had a 89 4 cyl with more power. At 55 mph on a perfectly level road it kept flipping from 5th to 4th when the slightest breeze kicked up. It would never reach 6th. I ran it in sport more all the time, only way it was drivable. Even in 4th, it would barely hold speed on steep grades at interstate speeds.

Next I got the OVTune, version 1.04. This was a huge improvement in the shifting, and added noticeable power in certain areas of the rpm range. However, the 33s were just too much for the tune to overcome, not Mat's fault, just physics (this is the subjective part, some guys may be perfectly happy with this setup).

After that, I had 4.88s installed at Virginia Driveline and Differential in Wytheville, VA. I paid $2500, that's with a new master bearing kits and all the trimmings, and they did a free gear oil change after the 500 mile break-in. I also got a quote from ECGS, they were $2300.

At that point, I was still on 1.04. The gears made a huge difference. At 55 it would hold 6th most of the time. Interstate at 65 to 75 it only had to downshift to 5th on steep grades. My main issue with that setup was that 1.04 was very aggressive with the shift executions, both up and down. During acceleration, it lunged forward each time it shifted up, and downshifts from 5th to 4th were pretty harsh.

Finally, I updated to OVTune 1.05 a few weeks ago. I've got nearly 1000 miles on that setup now, and it is awesome. With the 4.88s and 33s, it feels "right", no lack of power at any speed, smooth shifts all the way around. Interstate driving is a breeze, and it cruises around town at 35 mph in 6th gear at 1100 rpm getting great mileage. The only complaint I have is the cruise control is still not right, it downshifts when it doesn't really need to, sometimes even to 4th on grades at 70mph. How do I know it doesn't need to? I can run the exact same stretch of road without cruise and accelerate up that grade with no downshifting. But overall very pleased with this setup.

I was curious whether 4.88s were too much gear for smaller tires, so I put the factory 265/70R16s back on it and took it for a spin. The rpms were fine, never felt like it had way too much gear or anything like that. The main differences vs the 33s are that it had more power (as expected) and got much better mileage, 18 to 20 mpg in mixed driving vs 14 to 16 with 33s.

While I had the 265s on, I decided to flash back to factory tune just for fun. To be clear, this setup was 265/70R16 (factory size), 4.88s, factory tune. In other words, this was the "install gears first, tune later" approach. The results were surprising. Most of the transmission issues were gone. Shifting was smooth (still had the 2->1 "clunk"), power was good, interstate driving was fine, held 6th most of the time, smoothly downshifted to 5th on grades. Cruised around town in 6th at 35 mph 1100 rpm, and when I gave it a tad more throttle it just slowly accelerated, no hard jumps down to 4th like I had on factory 3.91s.

Based on my experience, I would say this:
    - 4.88s are definitely not too much gear, even on the tiny factory tires. If you have the means, I highly recommend them.
    - Adding OVTune to 4.88s is possibly the perfect setup.
    - Even with 33s, 4.88s with just the factory tune will probably fix most of the shifting issues. It will NOT fix the learning cycle like the tune does.
    - If you are running 33s (or larger), the tune will help, but I'm not sure how much. I couldn't test 1.05 with 33s and factory gears, my 4.88s were already in when 1.05 dropped, so others here can comment on that setup. I can say that 1.04 was not enough to offset the 33s to my satisfaction, so I added the 4.88s.

One other thing to think about, is it really worth all the money and effort just to make this truck drivable? I think this truck with 33s looks awesome, and I had the money, so it was worth it to me. Just something to ponder.

1st full tank on 1.05/87 running 91 and I got 14.9 mpgs on the display and 15.9 calculated for 285s. Now that I have the throttle and shifting figured out, I can't wait to see what my next tank yields.

The truck does not shift to 6th gear at 35 mph.

Our 4.88s should be here from Rogue Offroad any day now.

I'm thinking you guys should flash back to stock and drive it for a week and take a good hard look at the stock shift points and stock response / reactions. Honestly some of what I see posted here is starting to make no sense and does not align with what was done in 1.05.

For each gear there is 3 different possible torque converter scenarios. unlock, Half, Full lock.

So that is 3 different possible scenarions x 6 possible gears (exclude reverse). There are times when the truck isn't even shifting and people think it is.

    I can confirm that.
Been driving with ODBII app for a while. In 20-35 mph traffic, my stock truck w/TSB stays in 3rd until about 32 mph, then shifts to 4th and stays there way past 35.
    Converter status =0.

While in the 4th, there is an audible change that some folks may interpret as a shift. It is not. My guess it is Atkinson cycle//

    04B03 - 1.05 / 87 + SSP

Straight out of the chute I got to say how thrilled I am that the gas pedal now seems to be connected to the truck and responds to my foot !

Got a ways to go before commenting further but my fears of leaving 1.04 behind have been overcome. :burnrubber:

So I’m finding that you need to be more deliberate with the pedal on 1.05. Looking for insight from others running 1.05 (AT).

On my way home I’m in traffic and experiencing the similar stuff from the stock tune where I need to really get on the pedal to keep up with traffic. I seriously miss tip in for this reason hence my love of 1.03.

I also experienced it dance between gears, or at least what felt like gears. It feels like I’m not getting all the power transferred to motion like I use to when pushing the gas. Is this part of the settling and I’m just not familiar with that, or??? About 150 miles on 91oct 1.05 (first version)

Not trashing the tune just looking for feedback

I use BlueDriver but none of the obd scanners I’ve found have the ability to read the transmission converter or gear position.

So, after a full tank of 93 octane, ran an approx. 280 mile trip today (Pittsburgh-ish to State College and back), lots of hills, 65-70MPH Highway, etc. I've made this run often (I have an office in State College).
I have to say, I'm very impressed. The truck held gear well climbing hills at 65-70 with cruise control, no harsh downshifts (as I have ALWAYS had before on this trip), and I averaged 20.2 MPG instead of my usual 18.5.
No idle issues, no shifting issues, very smooth reliable power.
So, with a little over 500 miles since the tune, I remain VERY happy with the results. Thanks again Mat!

The 1.05 tune should incorporate the functionality of the SSP as it would cure a lot of the lack of response symptoms.

I don’t care for the truck to save .1 mpg by upshifting to the highest gear possible and lugging along. What I do care is that when I put my foot further on the gas pedal I want it to go right then and there in regular D mode. Forget ECT it’s too aggressive for normal everyday driving. That’s how every other car/truck operates except for the 3rd gen Tacoma.

It shouldn’t be that hard if @OVTune has cracked the code as he says he has. See below for chart reference. I think with all the low end torque he has unleashed, the V2 map may even still be overkill but a good starting place.
