My connector on the side of trans is full of atf. Has anyone seen that? I was checking it for corrosion today do to an intermittent shift issue.

is this due to a leaking internal harness. or is a solenoid pushing fluid through a wire upinto the connector

 

I would clean the area and look in a few days if you see atf around that male connector....

 

that's most likely atf being pushed out from the the seal failing.

 

I have seen these leak in the past . Its not uncommon . You can purchase a new internal harness but they are pricey .

Anyone know where you can buy that internal harness. and external harness to the ecu?? I'm having difficulty finding one.

If OEM doesnt work for you , Rostra makes aftermarket harnesses . I have used them in the past and they work well

I used the rostra harness and installed the zip kit. both were easy if you have done any trans work before
sonnax provided great instructions as long as you follow them exactly its easy

it made it shift much sharper and feel more normal to me

 

What is the ideal temperature for a transmission to run at? And specifically, are there any issues with it running at 125* in the winter?

Since I added a larger cooler, in cool/cold weather, especially when not towing a trailer, the transmission does not heat up.

I am wondering if I need to add a bypass valve to cut the cooler out of the circuit on cold days.

 

Hi Scott .
According to the FSM , your transmission is designed to operate perfectly at 176 degrees . If you are worried about overcooling , you can plumb your aftercooler before the coolant runs through the engine radiator . This way the oil in the cooling lines get the heat before it returns to the transmission pan.
Depending on the aftercooler , some are already built with a bypass .
If yours doesnt have a bypass , you can purchase one .

Some transmission shops sell transmissions with an add on aftercooler and request you bypass the engine rad completely .

As far as documentation for a transmission operating when its too cold ...Good luck with the search as I doubt you will find much other than initial start up in the morning . Heat is the killer that we need to constantly monitor

 

800 mile trip yesterday. Trans temp stayed about 167F. Thats with 800-1000#s extra on the truck. Outside temp was about 60F for the entire trip.

So far the cable lube from the dealer has held up flawlessly and hopefully it stays that way.

 

There is something which bugs me for long time and wanted to ask @gearcruncher:

I have a 2012 Tacoma (106000km) and a 2010 Camry (170000km), both sealed transmission. The Taco has a minor shift roughness from 4 to 5. The Camry seems to have moods and some rougher changes all over. After reading all the postings here it seems that these transmissions have rather a design flaw and/or fluid quality issue.

From your point of view, how reliable are these sealed transmissions comparing with other brands? Should we sell our Toyotas and get something else?

 

I wouldnt sell them
Toyota transmissions are made with alluminum inside and out and are very prominent to wear . Change the transmission fluid every year rather than what Toyota specifies as a recommended mileage and you wiill be good to go .

 

Simply drain and refill is enough? Should I add Lubegard every time?
