I got a question about wood stoves.
I have an old US Stove Co. stove( 1970’s ish)
I like this stove enough to try and refurbish it.
My question is ,would it be possible to remove bifold doors and put a more efficient glass door on it?
I’m in southern NH and if this is possible and someone knows something/anyone I can talk to about it.
Stove is fine for now. But it might have to be taken out to a shop for work.
I was looking at some wood stoves are almost $3000 or more either side of 3000. If I only have to pay eight or $900 or even 1000 to get what I’m after it will be worth it for me. Thanks

    In a word, no.

You can close the doors for slightly greater efficiency, but Franklins in general are very inefficient stoves (their basic design predates the Revolutionary War). Their appeal is more in the aesthetic of having a freestanding 'fireplace' than in producing lots of heat for little wood. Even if you were to modify/replace the bifold doors with glass (via a great deal of custom cutting and welding) it wouldn't dramatically increase the stove's efficiency, and your glass would soot in no time flat since the stove's not designed with an 'air wash' to keep it clean. If you want to hang onto it and give it a refresh because it's pretty then that's one thing, but trying to modify it to make it more efficient isn't worth the $$ it would take to get it even halfway close to what a more modern design could do for you. And it doesn't even have to be a new stove; there's tons of stoves in Craigslist that will do a much better job of throwing heat than the Franklin for well under the $1000 limit you're considering to try to improve the one you've got. :notsure:

Not trying to destroy your hopes and dreams, but I've done a lot of woodstove work over the years and figured I'd give my $.02

Would you? Seller wants me to PayPal you the money and you bring the cash instead of just me paying him direct. Idk, seems weird to me but whatever.
