Ok, so I know that the 4.0 in the second gen comes from the factory with half denso/half ngk. My question is, if you have the plugs changed at the dealer, do they do the same thing? Or do they run all denso/ or all ngk? Reason I ask, I just got done changing my plugs and they were ngk down the driver and denso down the passenger. (I just put all Denso in it, $4 a pop) My truck has 87k miles on it! See where I am going with this? I was told these were 30k plugs. If I went 87k with them, no wonder my mileage was starting to suffer and my idle was getting a wee rough.
Oh and I bought the truck with 70k on it, I didn't go all those miles before thinking to check plugs.

I'm not sure if the dealer does the same thing as the OEM plugs with half and half. They might do that because its a factory thing. I went and bought some high dollar iridium tipped plugs, gapped them to spec, and threw them in myself. If I were you I would too. I'm sure if you talked to the dealer they would put whatever you wanted in there.

And you had good result with that? From the reviews I have read on here everyone is saying to just stay with the stockers. I suppose I could give it a try at the next 30k service. I just went with the desno's this time around. Oh and it really isn't that hard to do yourself either, I was pleasantly surprised. It took me about an hour.

Every dealer you ask will probably give you a different answer, the best thing to do would be to call them up and ask them.

Not really too worried about it. I just wanted to figure out if it really did make it 87k on the original plugs...
Like I said, I bought it with 70k from a girl that moved to Utah from SoCal (PreRunner+heavy winter snow+no experience driving in it= one sweet deal for me!!) so I would have no idea if or where she had it serviced.

I don't know, but I'm guessing they put all of the same plugs in on both sides.
She probably didn't change the plugs since a lot of people awesome they can go up to 100k miles before changing on these trucks.

So I just changed my plugs today at 197.5k miles and they are half Denso, half NGK.
These cant be the original plugs can they?!? I bought the truck back in Feb 2014 with 115k miles on it. Never had a problem until recenty and lately the trucks been running a bit crappy. I'm really hoping this and some Seafoam in the gas tank will smooth it back out.
Porcelain is cracked on one of them...

Unless something's changed, 1/2 Denso + 1/2 NGK is how they come from the factory. It's doubtful the previous owner(s) bothered to buy/replace them that way, so I'd say your plugs were probably original.

+1. And they do look fairly spent. The Denso's look slightly less crappy than the NGK's, especially since they didn't crack.

Yup, this is my second time I personally have replaced the plugs in my truck, first was about 40K, and just a few weeks again about 70K on the ODO. I just stop by the Stealership, ask for the plugs for the 1GR-FE, they hand me 6 Denso plugs, all pre gapped, and I say Sayonara!. Also check eBay, dealerships sell them dirt cheap there, and same OEM plugs. Installed with No issues whatsoever, my truck runs great.

Those plugs don't look too bad for 197,000 miles. It was way past time to replace them however.

I've done hundreds of plugs and I've never seen mixmatched like that. NGK branded plugs like that is aftermarket for Toyota. Something was done in the past, the dealership might have run out of plugs that day and used aftermarket to finish the job.

Toyota installs mix matched plugs from the factory. I bought my truck brand new and when I replaced the plugs for the first time I found NGK on one side and denso on the other

I respectfully disagree. Toyota has installed 1/2 & 1/2 on the assembly line for years, dating back to at least the 1st Gen days.

    +1.
