The mechanic is my neighbor, he doesn’t want anything bad to happen because I know where he lives. He’s also a contract mechanic, too many slips and he can lose out on a few thousand dollars a month

Well... last night my wifes car started knocking on the drive home. 2015 Santa fe.. took a listen when she made it home, and told her that is not a good sound.. so I take her to work, and then took her car to dealership.

There was an update to the knock sensor that we just got a letter on... and today was the day that was supposed to be done.

Pull into the check on area, and the service manager walks up and said yea, we are not doing a software update today. You need a new engine.

Then tells me.there is a service campaign for the engine. Turns out the factory got a batch of engines full of casting flash that would break off and chew up the bottom end.

Soooo once Hyundai gives the ok, it is new engine time. In about 3 to 4 weeks...

seems it is very common problem, and the service department does about 7 engine replacements a week, over this issue.

New engine, with 100,000 mile warranty. Should help a little when its timw to trade it in. Something I had planned on doing in a few months anyway

How the hell does casting flash not get removed from an engine? That's literally the first thing you do after it cools, right before all the milling starts.

I watch "How It's Made" so know these things.
