Any good hiding places for spare key?

Have already had them replace the battery last year !!!

 

I put a spring hinge license plate holder on my FJ and just hung an extra key behind it

 

You can put smart key fob in sleep mode, which deactivates it/saves batt. Hold down lock button, and press unlock twice. I do this to my spare. so it's not searching all the time, to save battery.

 

I went to ACE hardware and had them make a non-chipped duplicate for like, a dollar. I wanted something I could put into my pocket while I was surfing, but leave my truck in a dangerous parking lot, without worrying about someone rooting around and finding a spare key. Thought about the truck hitch lock, but I feel like that sets my truck up as a target (take a hammer to that sumbitch and see if it holds up).

If someone were to get a copy of my unchipped truck key, they wouldn’t be able to drive anywhere without the truck shutting off.

I leave my real key in the truck inside of a realtor-style combo lock.

 

I did the same in case I lock myself out. If I lose the key, no one knows it belongs to a toyota.

 

This is what I would do. Fob in sleep mode, stored in center console. Take the physical key out and hide that somewhere, either hitch safe or zip tie it to the spare tire chain. The key is waterproof, the fob doesnt like long term exposure to the elements.

 

How do you wake the key fob?

 

Lock the key fob inside the truck in a secure location and then use the Viper Smart start app on your phone to unlock your truck !!!

 

Yeah the guy you dont see watches you do all that then appears magically after your gone.

 

Press the lock button, if I remember correctly. I mess with sleep mode once every two years or so, so I have to look it up every time I do. Twice, actually. I've done it twice.

 

Thanks I’ll give it a try. I keep mine in a faraday bag and don’t want it to drain the battery while constantly searching for signal.

 

Man, I'm Glad I live in northern Maine. I don't take my keys out of my truck, lock doors of house, nothing. Done it for the 20 years I've driven, and never had an issue.

Depends on the range of the sensor. My smart key works only with in close proximity of the doors, there have been times I extended my arm too far and it wouldn't open until I take another step closer.

 

..?? Blank keys? I do not have keyless entry, I figured it was just a reg. Key but Home Depot cut 2 for me. I can get in the truck but they will not start the truck. At first I was pissed, I called the dealer and they told me it had a chip in it. So now I have 2 extra keys that will not start the truck, but now I am liking the idea of keeping one under the frame
Please explain the blank key. Are they chip keys?

 

You shouldn't be able to lock your fob in car. If you're looking it in the bed of the truck, like tonneau + locked tailgate, then you can get the pop n lock to make the tailgate automatically lock/unlock with the doors. Seems the best solution to me.

 

You can put the fob in sleep mode in order to lock the fob in the cab

 

Oh I didn't know that! Just for my own knowledge, how do you do that?

 

I find the best place to store my key is in my pocket. I always lock my truck with the keyless remote and never touch the locks on the doors.
