What have you done to your Trailer today?

We still love the 195rb. Its allot of trailer for the size and tows well with the tacoma. We've made 3 round trips from Phoenix to Oregon and numerous camping and beach trips to California. In my opinion Its definitely optimized for 2 people. It does have the capability to sleep a couple more kids or a smaller adult on the dinette conversion but it would get crowded in there quick. It has the amenities a larger trailer would have just everything is scaled down. The stock battery is terrible so I would consider upgrading the battery capacity and adding solar as borderline necessasry. This trailer is still small enough to get into tight places and take off the beaten path which is great because I hate RV parks and established campgrounds.

Now the biggest downside we've found to this or any travel trailer would be a dissociation with nature. We miss laying in bed staring at the stars and listening to the monsoon rains on the tent. Perhaps it's a little too comfortable. We're planning on selling in a year or so and either Ill build an expo style trailer from the ground up or convert a 4x4 Van. Either way well be sleeping in an RTT.

 

Awesome, thanks so much for the detailed response! We're going to look at one this weekend, the dealer also has a 145rb we can check out. I think the 145 will be a tad too small for what we want, but you never know until you try it out. All the dealers around here have deep winter discounts going on.

 

Yeah keep your eyes peeled for a deal and look for an 18 now all the 2019s are hitting the lots. Ours was actually towed around and displayed at RV shows for a year before we looked at it. It was a little beat up from all the traffic but it was sold cheap and came with a dealer warranty so they replaced all the worn items before we took delivery.

 

That's a great point I hadn't paid attention to before. Now that I go back and look, a lot of the ones I'm seeing deeper discounts on are 2018s. I'll keep that in mind as I'm comparing. Thanks again!

 

Been busy with the Tiger Moth. Dexter 2 1/2" lift, hub adapters converting from 5 lug to 6, 1st gen Tundra wheels, and now figuring out the fenders.

Pretty straight forward lift. Now that it is in and I have figured about everything out I may go ahead and weld them to the frame and maybe weld a square tube from one to the other for extra bracing. It couldn't hurt

 

Removed my old PWM solar controller and replaced it with the Victron Smart solar MPPT controller

 

I realized after doing the fender modifications that mud flaps are needed. I fabbed up some brackets and they worked but as @Wild Crow pointed out they left a gap so I just adjusted my approach and BINGO

So in the previous post you could see there was quite a bit of difference between where the camper hitch sat and the truck hitch. I had to do quite a bit of figuring, guessing, and hoping my calculations were correct. I installed the standard SOS Concept rear bumper with dual singouts on the truck. I also installed Deaver stage III progressive leaf packs with 2 over loads for 11 leaves total and Bilstein B110's which raised the back of the truck some more, accomodated for the weight of the bumper hanging off the back, and prepared for the tongue weight of the bumper. Alot of variables here folks but I'm sure most of you have had to do the same.



well I got out and hooked it all up the other day(I'll admit I was a little scared to do so) and was tickled to see it all worked out.








I took it for a spin even getting it up to about 70 and mixing in some back roads and it pulled great. I'm still not sure about the hub adapters so I may end up changing the hubs and installing some hubcentric wheel spacers but we will see

 

Washed it but ran out of energy so no wax. Tested the camp chairs to make sure they still work. Huge success as they still hold beer!

 

Not a trailer Mod but will help stop the trailer, I had no blanks left to install the control knob so I installed on the cup holders. The Redarc brake controller was easy to install and hopefully will work great. Any tips on using the controller if anyone is running the same.

 

Toned down the impossibly bright interior lights.

hey guys, I don't know if this is the right thread to post it. Just try to install the wiring harness and brake controller, at tekonsha P3. 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road. Couldn't get power to the unit, and when I used a circuit tester to check for voltage, I got no reading on any wire. I checked at the controller, I checked where I Connected it to the wiring harness, and I checked where the wiring harness plugs into the tow package harness behind the kick panel. At no point did I ever detect any power. I opened up the fuse box, so I know missing fuses, pulled the toe fuse and saw I know issues. I'm at a loss here, and I'm not very experienced with this sort of thing. Would appreciate some advice, or for someone to idiot check me and tell me what I missed. If you guys have nothing, I'm probably just going to say it's a warranty issue and see what Toyota will do.

 

Well ... actually tow vehicle not trailer. Brought my Prodigy P2 brake controller over from my 1st gen to my new 2019. I used a $15, “plug n play” harness from my favorite ETrailer folks. It took about 10 minutes.

 

Nice. Lift is a good thing IMO, fairly easy with torsion axles just gotta make sure the axle(s) are straight so the tires don't scrub.

Did a flip on both of mine. Made my own kits. Cost me less to do both trailers than it would have cost to get just one kit.

 

If you have the factory tow package with a 7-pin on the rear bumper everything should be plug-n-play once you get the Tekonsha onto the kick panel connection. So yeah maybe a dealer trip is necessary.

 

Did you get a harness wire between the P3 and the truck or did you splice the ones that come with the P3 and the truck? Make sure it is grounded well or it won't work. There is a post near the truck side that worked perfect for me!

We bought a Jayco 17RK Hummingbird, Baja Edition, and love it. 3500# gross weight and it tows very well behind the 2014 DCLB. We do have a weight distribution hitch, which helps reduce the amount if bouncing we feel in the cab. We'd rented a number of other trailers, each of them having dual axles, and I feel the single axle allows a little more vertical bounce over bumps. I also installed Firestone Ride-Rite air springs - set to 40psi whenever we have stuff in the truck along with the trailer.

Changes to the trailer:

1. Mud flaps. Right after the very first outing on a gravel road. Those bigger Baja tires throw quite the rooster tail. I bought commercial truck glass-reinforced rubber and cut them down a bit, though they're wide enough to extend under the trailer a bit too. I just bolted 'em up using stainless hardware.

2. Backup/rearview camera. The Hummingbird is 7' wide, so I don't mount extended mirrors, though even if I did there's still a pretty deep blind spot back there. So I hard-wired a camera and then did a write-up here:

3. Reverse lights. We often show up at our camp spot after dark, just poor planning on our part. One mounted in the rear bumper, though I have a second one to go on the other side to match. And, two under the forward end of the camper aimed out a little to light the wheel area. All three come on when in reverse, but we can also turn them on individually from a switch panel just inside the camper door.

4. Cabinet lights. These are LEDs that I found at IKEA and wired through a reed switch so they're automagic like a refrigerator at home.

5. Bumper hitch receiver. We mount a rack behind the trailer to haul our bikes, the same one that fits the truck when we're unhitched. That way we can park the home and explore with the truck while still bringing the toys along - bikes on back, kayaks on top.

6. 7 Pin socket. Because our bikes have fat tires, the tail lights are hidden when the bikes are on the rack, either on the truck or the trailer. So I made a set of tail lights on aluminum square tubing that straps to the bike rack that plugs into the 7 pin trailer connector. Adding another connected to the tail end of the trailer makes the light bar usable with either.

 

Added to our existing solar with a suitcase set so an additional 100 watts but we can follow the sun with it.
