The hype is true

 

PSA sells complete uppers for ~400-450 with a basic build kit. Add in a lower for ~100-150 and you would have a rifle that is going ot run just fine and be good for deer hunting.

it wont be anything fancy, or the most accurate, or whatever but it will work just fine and kill a deer. (and still be decent for group shooting). And in the future you can change out handguards, triggers, stocks, ect to suit your needs.

Both my dad and I have PSA 223 uppers and they have been reliable and great.

 

If you are wanting to build it from the ground up it can be a bit more complicated with the DPMS or Armalite patterns and possibly not having everything work together. Im talkings stripped lower, barrel, type building.

Arm braces are akward, hard to shoot with, expensive, and in summary, they all look ridiculous. From a functionality standpoint, I prefer the far less mall ninja-y foam covered buffer tube.

Edit, you can also put a front grip on an SBR.....

 

I built one for $2K but that was before optic, it was also in 6.5 creedmoor.

have you tried a SB brace? Also if your overall length is at least 26" you can put vertical fore grip on it.

 

I have! And its ok as a "stock". Not my favorite by any means but they get the job done. I still prefer SBR's though.

No. I don't think I have shot an SB. How do you measure 26"? Even in the most creative measurement scenario, i think I'd need an 11-ish inch barrel. No bueno, my longest SBR bbl is 8.5". Easier to just buy a $29 stock, send $200 to ATF and not wrack my brain...... But, then again, I don't live in CA or NY

I’d recommend buying the complete upper, but building the lower. You can get all the info you need to build the lower just from YouTube videos. AR10s (308) have a tendency to be finicky with cycling issues so you have to know what you’re doing when assembling the upper to avoid those problems. Ar15s don’t give a shit and you can pair garbage parts with high dollar parts and most will run just fine for years.
The lowers are assembled the same way for the most part on both platforms and all the moving parts are fool-proof. You can probably build a really nice lower for the price you’d pay for a complete one rather than buy complete and swap parts later on.

I believe over all length is measured with the stock fully extended. 8.86" barrel on my MP5 with SB brace is a tad over 26". I understand that it's much easier to cross state lines with a pistol. I'm sure I'll SBR sometime in the future but this is working right now.

Extended but not includeing any removable muzzle devices. If pin and welded then you can count it (for muzzle devices)

Incorrect. That is the method for measuring with rifles. With pistols, it's measuring it's shortest possible functioning length. You measure from the end of the buffer tube, to the end of the barrel (or pinned muzzle device). Stupid, I agree. But it is what it is.

The shortest possible barrel length you can get to meet the 26" overall length requirement for a VFG is a 10.5" barrel WITH a Law Tactical folder on it. A bit of grey area since the firearm can technically fire once with the brace folded, at the risk of damaging the firearm. The shortest length without the Law Folder is a 11.5" Barrel.

Another problem. If the AR or whatever platform was sold as a pistol and not a "firearm" (as most stripped receivers are sold as), then you can never put a VFG on it, no matter the overall length. Another grey-ish area (seriously, this is way down the rabbit hole). Basically if the firearm is over 26" in overall length without a stock (ever) it is considered a "firearm" and nothing else, you can put a VFG on it. You cannot go back and fourth with designations. Just like if a receiver is designated as a "rifle", you can't just swap the stock for a brace and throw a short barrel on there. Once a rifle always a rifle.
