3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

For what it's worth, when I took my 2018 in for the tsb they told me it didn't include the sound dampener in the cab because mine came from the factory with it already done.

Whether or not that was true, who knows.

 

Ah, guess that could be possible! The sound dampening foam for the cab is a joke though. Thin piece of foam in the c pillars. I shoved a lot more foam in there when I did mine ha

 

I can hear a noise when I open my rear sliding window and am driving at a steady speed. Sounds like a whistling type sound. It can be pretty annoying. Is this what you are all talking about? I'm assuming yes. I wonder what causes it?

I haven't brought this to the attention of the dealership where I purchased the vehicle from, and after reading a few posts here it sounds like a waste of time.

 

Not a whistle sound, it is more like a resonance tone.

 

You’d know if you had the diff howl lol it would probably be harder to hear with the back window down. I know with the other windows down it can drown it out quite a bit. The sound gets transferred into the back of the cab via the cab mounts.

 

I told them even if the TSB called for it- I didn't want it put in. I knew that had nothing to do with the howl and I didn't want all the interior plastics removed and re-installed and then have rattles in addition to the howl.

I brought my truck in for the 15k maintenance and let them know about the diff howling. They reproduced it and without any hastle, ordered what’s needed for TSB 0013-18-Noisy. I have a 17’ OR DCLB. I’ll sift through the thread but is there anything I should know before going through with it?

 

The main thing is that the TSB is only masking a noise. Your noise may simply be a resonance only, or not. My noise was a bad rear differential. Also, the TSB may or may not mask it enough to make you happy so be prepared to stay focused on getting a fix that you can live with. Best of luck to you.

 

I have a 2019 DCSB 6MT, have the noise, no dampers on the rear cab mounts.

 

I thought I’d post an update since my rear differential was replaced with the help of Toyota corporate master techs and engineers. My rear differential is still silent after about 600 miles. My first rear differential when the truck was new was silent until about 1000 miles. While I’m hopeful, I probably won’t breathe easily until another 500 or so miles but I do realize that some have said their howl started even later. But, I’m done worrying about it. I do have a vibration after the diff replacement that corporate is looking into but I’m confident they’ll fix it. Corporate has treated me very well and gone above and beyond - I’m happy and impressed. I FINALLY plan to mount up my Ray 10s and Wilpeaks in the coming week and it’s time to enjoy my truck. So I've had this problem in my 18 TRD Sport since about 1k miles in. Usually happens when going up hills 4th-6th gears or towing in 4th. The whine/howl seems to be coming from the rear diff... I mean, every single trip to and from work I would hear it at least 3 times. I noticed every time as this particular sound irritates the shit out of me.

However, and I can't see how this has a damn thing to do with a diff howl, I filled up with high octane 2 weeks ago and just noticed that the sound is now absent completely. Haven't heard it in 2 solid weeks. I'm paying closer attention now and it's quiet. I suspect I'll try low octance again and see if it returns, then go back to the expensive stuff and see what happens. Got my head scratching over this one....

 

Hmm doubt you have the diff howl. It howls when lightly feathering the throttle and/or when completely off the throttle. Worse when going down a hill off the throttle. If yours is making some noise when on the throttle going up hill then I would say it’s not the dreaded rear diff howl.

 

Very well might be something different, but it sounds like it's coming from behind me in the cab. But I see no way diff gas would affect that at all. So it's got to be something else.

 

My rear diff was replaced because of the howl. The new rear diff is slighly quieter and only howls above 50 degrees farenheit.

 

That's funny because mine was addressed under the TSB and it was much better until it got cold out.

 

I’m in the howls louder when it’s warmer camp ha Last week it got above 50 and I heard it over a 10mph range. Never had it in that wide of range before.

In the morning around or below freezing I can’t get it to howl. If I go on a long trip in the cold it will start howling. I think the metal just has to heat up to the right temp to transfer it into the cab better. YMMV

Also, shop foreman wants the FTS who originally drove my truck to drive it again. He said it still probably wouldn’t get Toyota to do anything, but the more us SR5 guys complain the better the chance a real fix comes out. Probably a waste of time but I’ll do it for the greater good ha

No. I bought the truck in April 2017. Brought it back with just 400 miles on it. They said the rear diff had metal shavings and replaced it. The new diff had the whine but not nearly as loud. They told me it's normal. We rode 2 other tacomas on the lot that make the noise. I drove a friends Tacoma that made the noise but it was so quiet only I could hear it because now my ears are trained to hear that damm noise.
