you could put it that way. Most people don't get it, but hunters are the biggest conservationists out there. They started the whole movement, Roosevelt and Leopold especially. Ducks unlimited restore more wetlands than all states combined.

I get paid to bird (wildlife biology, wildlife research, endangered species act compliance .. that kind of shit), but at the desk more and more now. Still a birder though. Just only on the clock now, free time is family, friends, and my truck. It all started doing rattlesnake removal to pay the bills 15 years ago and just led to a career.

Right, but they want wetlands so that they have hunting grounds? Just so it's noted, I have zero opposition to hunting.

But when people say "hunters are conservationists" that's equivalent to saying "soccer Moms want Targets and Starbucks on every corner because the stores make neighborhoods safe" Both parties are looking for development or anti-development that benefits their way of life.

    anti-development is conservation

creation of wetlands benefits a grip of species, not just the game birds that are only hunted to quota to not negatively impact the population dynamics. I get you have no issue against it, but most hunters are conservationists. You should give them their due respect. There is alot of resources out there that speak to it.

Yeah man, don't get me wrong, we're on the same page here. Obviously everyone here is pro-wild-lands and anti-regulation on the whole.

We need more OHV, more BLM, and sorry for seeming like I'm trying to act otherwise. I mtn bike and the struggle with bikers/ hikers/ horses is brutal. Its my natural inclinational to question anyone who says "I come here with pure intentions." Truly wild places like wet lands are purely unique and should remain as such. Thanks for your work keeping them in that state.

For me, there is truth in the statement that hunters are conservationists because they want places to hunt. More importantly, hunters recognize that by investing in wetlands and wildlife refuges, they are not only creating places to hunt but preserving areas to preserve species and not just those they hunt. And by hunting, hunters also help to maintain healthy population levels of a species too.

I've always been fascinated with raptors. Now that I live on the edge of a canyon it's great viewing for them. But, no, I don't go out of my way to view them. I am always on the lookout for different birdies on my hikes, though. Nature lover all around.

Wow, that's some mental gymnastics to make that analogy. Targets make neighborhoods safe? I guess you haven't been to many of them where I live. Hunters try to preserve areas for hunting. Of course, but most only hunt a few days a year, but work to preserve the environment 365 days a year. Way to cheapen the work of hunters. We could do with less Targets, and freakin' Starbucks. We would not be so well off without the land that has been preserved by hunters. And as was mentioned, non targeted species benefit greatly, as well. What hunters do benefits EVERYONE. You can not say the same for a Target or Starbucks. Also, if you have time, look up the PittmanRobertson Act.

Seeing Don’s bird hunting photos made me jealous enough to head back home to Iowa for a few days for some hunting. A few of us did alright today..... can’t complain.
