Nothing wrong with a stainless 1911. Polished up with wood grips they look mighty purdy.

That’s the set up now. I just never have been a fan of stainless. I have a stainless 357 and I can live with that one

    Because it was your grandfather's.

    Leave it
    Shoot it
    Keep it
    Take good care of it

Pass it on to your son...

He’s alive and well and he said do what I wish it isn’t his anymore. His shotgun and hunting rifle in the other hand will not be modified in anyway and will strictly be hunting guns. And I got a daughter lol.

I have a WWII-vintage Nazi-contract Belgian Hi Power that I got from my father-in-law. He got it from his father who got it from a nephew who brought it back from Europe. Someone had coated it in stainless - seems to have been the thing to do back then. When I got it, the finish had been scratched and worn so I opted to restore it. Found a gunsmith in Florida to do it - took months of slow chemical etching to remove the stainless steel and not remove the markings on the pistol. Years later - after my father-in-law passed away - my wife and I were going through a file folder in the stable and found a manila envelope filled with papers....in it were the original capture papers from when it was brought back at the end of WWII. Score!!

By the way, I live in PA, too.

    Before and after.

They are the only ones that would possibly do the job you had to have done in Fl anyways and have it almost if not perfect. I have had them do two guns over the yrs and they're perfection driven!

I am almost positive you are right. The computer I was using back then shi* the bed and I lost all my old emails from the time. I had checked the web site and it looked familiar.

They were exacting - took months to slow etch the stainless so that I didn't lose the Waffenamts. I came back magnificent - no longer the original finish...but it wasn't with the stainless, either.

Any experience with the Dan Wesson Vigil? What compared to a comparably priced Colt?

I don't have the Vigil but I several Valor's and they are all fantastic. I have never the slightest issue with any of them. The only pistol I have that comes close is an Ed Brown, but the EB is several hundred more $$$ and honestly it's hard to tell the difference. DW pistols have no MIM parts either.

Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. This will actually be my first 1911. I actually prefer as traditional as possible but don’t mind some slight variations and improvements. I wonder how they compare to a similarly priced Colt? I’ve heard the fit and finish of the DW is still likely better but resale (won’t be an issue for me) might be better on the Colt.

The DW will definitely have better fit and finish. They have a lot of hand fit parts including frame and slide. I have the black duty finish on 2 of them and after a few thousand rounds the finish is like new. I haven't bought used but I can't imagine a Colt would hold it's price better then a DW. I have Springfield, STI, Ed Brown and DWs. My favorites are the DWs.
