I's a long thread. So, maybe I missed it. But here it goes.

I recently had a problem where the truck was in 4 wheel low and would not go back to 4 wheel or 2 wheel drive. Called the dealer. He told me to always place the transmission in N whenever changing among these options. I did it and presto, all was fixed.

    Who knew?

    Hope this helps.

If your speed is below 62 MPH, you can shift in and out of 4H all you want, so OP was OK there.
The road surface won't have any effect on the system, but driving in 4H on dry roads is obviously a bad idea, so again OP was OK in the rain.
You don't have to depress the clutch to switch in and out of 4H with the MT. I switch back and fourth all of the time while in the snow. I think you're thinking of 4L.

The thread depth comment made it clear that the guy didn't know much about 4WD as opposed to AWD.

manual says 45 to 50 MPH and I have found on my 2018 6 speed Manual Transmission it is Yes I can Turn the selector switch anytime to 4 Wheel High (not 4 wheel Low) it will engage However when Disengaging I have found that it will keep blinking until I push the Clutch pedal down then it flawlessly with out any sound disengages I have done it without and waited ...Waited ... and waited then I could feel a bump... and it disengaged I really did not care for that so I have decided to treat it the Same way I do with My 2000 Toyota Tacoma with the 5 Speed Manual Transmission and Not worry about Fucking it up.

I love all the people saying it’s not the tread when I had this exact same issue for the exact same reason and the root cause was THE TREAD!

Only until I swapped for 4 new tires (winter) did it go away.

OP may not have a tread issue but it can’t be ruled out.

Had the same thing happen on our old JKU. We had a sidewall tear and swapped out it out for the spare. Jeep would not engage in 4hi.

The dealer checked it for the tread wear - swapped out all four wheels, found that it engaged, then gave us a call.

Dealer actually told me that they kept a complete JK wheel set on hand as part of the troubleshooting process when they had issues engaging 4wd. If the vehicle still didn't engage, then they started looking at other potential causes.

Then it should have failed to engage during the first month (after replacement) 4x4 exercise which OP says he does every month.

That's only the case for 4Lo. You can go in and out of 4Hi regardless of where the clutch is.

Got it .... habits from the Older 2000 Tacoma carry over into the newer Tacoma and Certainly don't hurt to follow the older Tacoma has the manual shift lever and You do have to press the clutch for that to disengage smoothly and to engage it smoothly.

Can someone explain to me how tire pressure can change the circumference of a tire?

It does not change the absolute circumference to the tire, it changes the circumference in relationship to the other tires. To the truck (diffs, transmission) the only thing that matters is the radius from the center of the hub to the ground. It does not matter what that distance is, as long as all four are the same. When you have a low tire, that changes the tire radius, which effectively changes the ratio.

With all that said, and with respect to @JoeCOVA, no four of the tires are ever spinning at the same rpm because of turns.

You know how when you have chains on you can still put the truck in and out of 4wd? We even just did that with only one chain on 1 wheel due to a broken link and it worked fine. There were no issues locking into and out of 4wd and those tires were totally mismatched with the chains on only one tire.

WTF, Toyota, ya mutts, slap that sweet Torsen fulltime 4WD center differential into the Tacoma. You threw the dogs a bone with the 4Runner's MTS and Crawl Control, time to put some meat on the bone and give the Tacoma dogs the Torsen.
