TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

Don’t get too excited. Car is still very heavy. Comfortable though. Leg space on all 4 seats is plentiful, and the trunk is absolutely huge.

 

Don’t tell the mods, but we kinda have an interest in fast things. Looking at 4:56 gears for my Tacoma. Wonder how fast it will accelerate it it’s always in the power band... mileage can’t be much worse.

 

I’ve been told time and time again that my car will never be fast because it’s a big giant heavy Lexus that can’t turn worth jack. I get pretty good gas mileage considering the original 1UZ was designed like 30 years ago.

 

Fast is all relative, and takes money. Custom takes ingenuity and creativity. Haters are usually lacking the latter.

 

Well, I went and did a pulley wrap thing. I wanted something between 38 and 42 mm in diameter to fit in this space. After much searching, I found a neat solution in an Audi/VW 1.8 timing belt idler. It's 40mm dia. I just chucked it up in the lathe and machined down the base to get it where I wanted it. The Gates RPM belt worked out perfectly with the 2.5" pulley.
Been a couple weeks. No problems so far. The bad news is that the boost didn't go up. So, I guess it wasn't slipping after all.

And yes, I plan to upgrade the bolt. Actually I'm going to a stud/nut arrangement. But the stud backordered on me.

 

Here you go guys, this is the 1.87" by Smoothflow Pulleys. Custom job just for me, with the RIP mod as well. I put in my roush tensioner too, and it's at around 20% from max, which is about as tense as I want to go.

So far we seem to be seeing another 1psi in all conditions over the 2.0" pulley. I will be monitoring belt dust for a while but I've already put 200 million revolutions on the supercharger with this pulley (napkin calculation) and I've seen only a tiny bit. Nothing, actually, for the past couple of days, so perhaps the belt has broken in or something.

My car will have just a bit short of AMG S class power and weigh 1000 lbs less. I don’t see what’s wrong with that.

Compared to a similar age AMG you're not far off.

you'll love it. boost, with 4.56's is awesome. plus a valve body upgrade.. mmmmhhmmmm. I love the low end my truck has. thats all im building it for. off the line power. and it has it.

that came out awesome man! sucks that wasnt your cause for boost loss... but one thing less to worry about now. so.. back to vacuum leaks?
