Compare it to other vehicles with the same (or larger) size.
I haven't heard of any vehicle that doesn't have serious rust problems after several years in salt. American brands are typically worse (!!!), but its handled more along the lines of "yeah rust, so?" and since american brands are 5 year disposable vehicles, the rust issue doesn't usually hit. But for an example, do a google search for "f150 rust".

The frame on these trucks actually *is* a lot better than a lot of other trucks. In fact one of the reasons why I went with Tacoma was because the frame is so much more robust than american brand compact trucks. I've actually owned american brand compact trucks, and (1) their frames rust just as badly or worse, and (2) their frames are so much weaker that you just can't put them to work doing things like snow plowing.

GM's for one, are known for ripping control arm mounts out of their frames when plowing. That's on "full size" trucks, and for their compact trucks, TACO'ing their frames just behind the front wheels. GREAAAAT STUFF!

Great resurrection! In for the follow ups. Btw, a good detailers trick for putting new life in collapsed seats is you use a garment steamer on the seats. The steam will fill and expand collapsed foam voids and hopefully kills any lingering bacteria. I would also put a household dehumidifier in the cab, close up all the windows and doors to pull as much lingering moisture out of the upholstery, headliner, interior.

Yeah, thats why the regular cab was discontinued. They couldnt justify making seperate parts for the least selling model sadly

Should be getting the truck back from the shop tomorrow. Gonna unbolt the seats, tear out the carpet, soak the floorpan with hydrogen peroxide, follow up with white vinegar to make sure it's dead, steam the seats and probably install some seat covers since I've had a hard time finding replacements for cheap. I've already run a dehumidifier in the cab for 5 days straight, got it dry as a chip in there so it should be good. Gonna put a 2nd cabin air filter in after I sterilize it so I know I won't be cycling spores back in, I already fogged the a/c ductwork so I don't want to undo what ive done.

Gonna be putting the new carpet in, seats back, and installing rain rail on roof and new front grill.

Sunday I'll be doing house building stuff (it's gonna rain), Monday I'll be doing paint correction all day.

Sure, because we all know that the 2TR-FE (the only GOOD engine) is a TOTALLY new engine from 2016+ and has never been in a Tacoma before, also that the R156 transmission is a TOTALLY different transmission from the rest of the R15x's that they've been making (aisin is a subsidiary of toyota) since the 1980's.

It's okay. So far I'm only in $850 for parts and labor. That includes Mount and balance on all 5 tires (full size spare), valve cover gasket, a new alternator (it wasn't charging the battery), full cooling system check, replacement of the bypass line (did get the updated metal replacement).

So far it's still a cheap truck, but not as much. I'm not too frustrated though, it sat for a year and a half and in the condition it was left in I'm surprised it wasn't worse.

Just looking forward to getting it back Monday and going HAM on the interior and installing fresh parts.

How much are you trying to make on the truck?

Honestly I'd love to have top dollar, but there is some minor body damage and a good many rock chips that's keeping it out of that range.

NADA Clean retail in my area with this mileage is around 9k, I think that's a bit high but I was thinking 8-7.5k if it looks as good as I think it will.

It won't need anything besides minor paint and a dent or two popped out.

Just has so many miles on it.
    Probably normal for your area.
    $5,000- will still be a 100% profit.

You've got the detailing skills  Get yourself some touch up paint and clearcoat and start-a-blending. All sorts of videos and products out there to make 'er nice and shiney despite the flaws you can't mask. I like Chemical Bros., a decent paste wax and finisher will do wonders! Awesome thread, thanks for keeping it up:oldglory:
