Happy shit Friday:frusty: Cranked my T4R this morning to warm up while I finished saying bye to the wife and baby girl. Click my headlights on and BAM! There goes my driver side HID. Open the hood and the connector from the ballast to the bulb had cracked:angrygirl:

yuck. might as well use this to open up a discussion...I've seen multiple differing opinions on here and other places about warming your vehicle up. Some say it's bad, some say it's fine, some say it's recommended. what say you?

well, duh, but any opinions on the negative side effects (if any) to warming the engine up like that? clearly the negative side affect is being a pansy for you!

I'm hit or miss with it really. Majority of the time I'm a no warm up kinda guy.

    Twas the case this morning

My road was in some sort of wind tunnel this morning and it was ball knocking cold so I needed a twix minute.

The warm up process is one of the hardest things on your engine. I don't let mine warm up from idling, but I do take it easy until it gets up to temp.

I am weird and actually like the cold in the morning, I enjoy sitting in the vehicle with that chill as it kinda kicks my body into overdrive to warm up and gets me energized. Then as I'm driving to work and get warmed up it's more like I put some effort into warming up instead of feeling like I'm trying to go to sleep slowly warming up under a blanket lol.

so is letting it sit in the driveway better for it than cranking up and immediately driving off, even easy driving?

engines are most efficient at temp..

thing about engine being at temp for idling is the trans is still cold.

crank your truck up before buckling and all the small things you do in the am just to let it sling some oil then take off, i let mine run for probably less than 20 seconds before going in reverse and leaving. I do like you though, I don't get on it hard at all when I leave in the AM.

Warming up was needed to get oil flowing through the motor in the days of old. Now a days 20-30seconds is all you need. Just take it easy in it the first few miles and let the rest of your fluids warm up and your good to go.

I've plugged up the old 6.0 in the garage in alabama, but only when I wake up for about 30 mins. It just acts better when it first starts even here in alabama.

when we drove it to indiana and had a blizzard we left it plugged in with an extension cord over night.

also, if you ever crank a 7.3 even the ones that came in the later body styles in the temps we had this morning you'll see the rpms fluctuate just like a tractors does.

have a 99 7.3 and it's a tank with 310k miles on engine and new trans.

I had a 99 7.3 at my last job but it didn't/still doesn't get ran much. has like 90k miles on it, lol. But it carries a drilling rig that used the motor for hydraulic pressure, so it has a lot of hours on it.
