Most vehicles are set in that range somewhere. I could get quite close to 28-29 MPG on my STi at 65 MPH, my Vette gets over 30 MPG at 65 and my Tacoma (6MT) got 22-23 MPG in stock form on roads I could average 50 MPH.

The thing I'd like to see regarding the transmission and manually locking out 6th gear is the effect on the transmission temperature. When I had my 2013 I found it would clunk in and out of torque converter lockup in 5th constantly at 40-45 MPH and it was driving me absolutely nuts. When I locked out overdrive to hold the truck in 4th gear, even though the converter was supposed to lock up, I'd see my transmission temperatures go up a solid 20°F, which I never liked, so I learned to live with the clunk.

I live in east TN which is all hills. I get around 15-16 MPG which I just except because I like the truck while hoping gas prices stay low.

Agreed, but I was just shocked that I got better mileage in a v8 ram that weighs 1500lbs more and undoubtedly has worse aerodynamics. Trust me, there is a whole list of things I would rather have done than made that trip, but when it comes to family....

Who buys a truck for gas mileage? Road trips - fill up, grab some snacks, and enjoy...

Smaller engines usually have to work a lot harder because they don't make the torque of bigger engines (V8s). Working harder kills mileage. V8s don't suck like they used too. The GM LS engines for example are pretty damn efficient on the highway.

I think some of these v8 s also have cylinder deactivation to increase MPGs also

Yeah, I get it. If I just had one vehicle though, the Tacoma would probably not be it. Just me.

Very true. But even before GM and others started to install that. They were doing pretty damn good on the highway. Their torque definitely helps.

This is exactly right. I drove 6000+ miles from KY to ID and back in September and really paid attention to the MPGs. At "normal" interstate speeds (70ish) I got 19 or 20 MPGs. On US highways/backroads doing 55-65mph I got 22-23 MPGs. On interstates Out West with the absurdly high speed limits (doing 80-90mph) my mileage plummeted.

the same numbers like these held true for my 3.4l v6, basically the engines rev high so keeping the RPMs at 2000 or 65mph will get the best MPGs for these trucks

Not to hijack your thread, but were you driving back home on Sunday, Dec. 30th down 95? Is your Taco dark colored with a Wilson Lil Wil CB antenna on the roof? Saw described Taco in a rest stop in the Carolinas; before I could say Hi to the driver it was gone.

Taco is a great around town truck. I don't like it on the highway either. It has a very hard time on hills and especially if there is any headwinds.

What was the weather/temps like during the trip? What were you hauling besides yourself? Any other mods done (tires, suspension etc.....)?

I have no idea what is wrong with my ‘17 OR, drove from Austin to Los Angeles last month and it never got over 14mpg. We weren’t doing any speeding either, in fact we were taking it easy camping along rhe way and seeing all the sights. What's wrong with it? :notsure:

JK. - adding any type of racks, OR tires gear and armor weight to these things really drops the mpg’s.

I mean for the size of the vehicle that they are installed in. When a bigger truck with a bigger engine gets better mileage than a mid size truck with a smaller engine. That says a lot right there.
A friend of mine's Silverado gets better mileage than l do, and l drive pretty conservatively.
