If you are unhappy with highway performance, my recommendation is to buy a 2002 Nissan Xterra with a Yakima loadwarrior. Drive that for 15 years. Then the Tacoma will feel like luxury. Quiet and powerful. I couldn’t be happier!

100% because you are going 80mph. Anything above 70 and these trucks get extremely thirsty.

I just drove e from Punta gorda to Otlando florida doing the speed limits and here is my readout.
Not sure how you drive to get that bad. I understand the mountains but I got 18 pulling a mini camper coming back from Montana.

Yes l know what AFM is. I worked on them.

His Silverado didn't have it. Plus the earlier models had some issues with premature piston skirt and cylinder wear. Plus usually only activated at about 55mph under the right conditions. Light load etc. Any increase in throttle or load and off it would go. The newer systems are much more advanced and can ativate at higher speed and loads.
But my buddies truck didn't have it and he still got a bit better mileage than me.
My mileage doesn't bother me at all.
My Tacoma gets what it gets. When l need gas, l fill it up and keep driving. I bought it to use as a truck. Knowing full well the realities of what mileage I woukd get and what affects fuel economy. I just wish that others would accept the same thing. l bought a very capable truck. It aint gonna act like a Prius.

I drive my truck from Jacksonville, Fl to Asheville, Nc several times a year and always average 20 to 21 mpg. If you drive around 65 to 70 mph this thing does great on the highway.

It's hard to believe that someone driving 80 mph in a truck can complain about fuel consumption. You probably should have bought a sports car lol.

I'm not saying l like his truck better than mine. Just stating the facts of the fuel efficiency of some V8s. I don't own one. He does. We compared mileage and his was usually better than mine. l was just using his truck as an example.
Where l used to live (Toronto, Canada). Gas was over $4.00 US for a gallon of gas. Where l live now is about the same. When l was looking at buying a truck l never even looked at GM. I gave up on them years ago. Way too many problems.
I wanted to try the Toyota Tacoma because l always heard so many great things go about them.
I did and have never regretted my decision. I love my truck. I don't care what mileage it gets. l work out my milesge as one my ways to keep track of how well it's running. Any sudden or slow st deterioration in mileage is usually an indicator to me to check on things.

Its asinine to berate people for wanting to get the best MPG they can or near the perceived values of the window sticker. "You should have bought a prius." Did anybody say they wanted 50MPG? I didn't see it. "I love putting as much money as I can in my gas tank. I fucking hate my wallet. Fuck that cash in there. That shit needs to be gone." Do you run your homes AC with the windows open? Doubtful cause you know its wasting dollars.

Its not unreasonable to want the best MPG you can given your situation. Its all a compromise. You want a truck for truck things, but don't want 12MPG like its a 3/4 ton from 2003. Makes sense. I wan't the best MPG I can within reason. I'm not going to hypermile and at some point, you get what you get and accept it. I didn't quite understand how far off EPA estimates can be based on their methodology, but its all very clear to see when you monitor your MPG going various speeds.

Driving around Fla I get 20-21. I'm just shocked that add a few hills and it dropped. Most of it seemed attributed to the constant downshift and not so much that it downshifted, but it stayed in the lower gear unless I did something. 10mph shouldn't make that much of a difference. 80mph isn't necessarily excessive considering there are states with 85mph limits. I would think that Toyota would engineer there vehicles to operate at such speeds considering no other vehicle that I have driven see such a negative hit at highway speeds. If Dodge can figure it out, surely Toyota should be able to do as good.
