I had my new 19 on the PA Turn Pike for three hours over Christmas. Truck had under 1k miles on it. Cruise set at 65, rpm’s 2000-2100. I got 22.8 with a M/T. Never had to down shift out of sixth. Pulled every grade without any issues.
    Love my M/T.

Like others said, 80 MPH for a prolonged period will kill your MPG. With my 4 banger, not really broken in yet, at 1400 miles and no big hills, on cruise control, 60 MPH gives me 23 MPG. 70 gives 21 and 75- 20 and 80- 19.

Seems that every 5 MPH increase gives 1 MPG decrease. All hills to the mix, I can see you getting less.
Lots of aerodynamic drag too with trucks.

Totally agree, I really like my Tacoma, however going cross country, It is really a chore to drive, the smallest hills it has to shift and after awhile it just drives me "nuts" it is almost constantly changing gears, going thru the mountains I forget "D" and reach for "4" it takes very little incline to cause the Tacoma to downshift. I don't know if all Tacoma's perform this way or not, I can only speak for mine a 2009 Access Cab 4x4. I drive at a reasonable speed generally about 5mph over the limit. absolutely love the truck, but we have resorted to taking the car on most trips (we are long ago retired & road trip alot) My Tacoma has as a result few miles, & will probably get another but am waiting for Toyota to increase the HP or do what ever it take to make this truck a little more road friendly, I would really like to see a diesel. don't shoot me down, just my opinion

The manual was certainly in my thoughts. If I had a manual, there is no way I even consider downshifting. I don't understand why the auto does this. There are times when you would do this, but my truck was downshifting on a slight upgrade or if I tried to gain 2mph after backing off for various reasons. I really had to feather the pedal to keep it from happening. To the point that I was completely focused on the pedal. I don't see how anyone can accept this as normal.

Take a look at the OVTune. Seems like it solves the problems with the auto tranny.

I just drove 3k miles to Todos Santos in Baja (practically the southern tip) and back in my 16 DCOR, 255/85/16’s, stock 4.3 gears, rtt, 2 full 5 gal jerry cans, 28 gallons of water, 2 full size spares, 35lbs of tools, a stocked 60 qt fridge and two plano boxes of food, one adult and one child passenger, plus other misc gear including the weight of my drawer system, and I averaged 19mpg after calculating for tire size. Average speed probably around 66 mph running 91 octane.

The 70MPH on your multi information display next to the cruise control symbol, is that the speed your cruise control is set to or the current driving speed while looking at a different page? Just out of curiosity, I don't get that on my '17.

OP, a lot of people also don't fully appreciate the effect of wind on mpgs. IE, doing 80mph into a 10mph headwind will be working the engine just like driving 90mph on a calm day. At that point you're already at 3/4 throttle and lucky to be breaking double digit mpgs. Same goes for slower speeds but the effect won't be as drastic. But as many have already said, anything above 70-75 you might as well not even bother looking at the mpg page...

Cruise was set at 70 at that time but the 2.5 hour trip was a mix if 55mph zones to 70 mph zones. Google map from punta gorda to universal studios to see my route. Cruising at 70mph I get 24.5 mpg on flat ground stock sr5 4x4.

I got that look a lot on my 7300 mile roadtrip. Cruise set at 60mph entire way. I was towing and the savings added up

Oh ok, I was just wondering about the indicator itself, I've never seen that before. So the speed under the temp gauge only comes on with cruise control and shows what it's set to? The only digital speed readout I get is the driving speed on the home page.

The basic equation for air resistance (and the power required to overcome it) is non-linear. Drag=[(constant k)(velocity)^2]; there is a lot to the constant k, but it doesn't really apply here because that change is linear. As you increase the velocity (linear), the amount of force required to overcome it is exponential. Unfortunately designers/engineers can't change the laws of physics.
