Come on Toyota fix the thin a** paint

The hell are you talking about? Waterborne paint is thicker than the old solvent based stuff. The downsides are cost and drying time.

 

just go buy some primer, its the same color

 

Just had warranty work done in December was no issue. Paint is a wear item unless it’s really messed up like the 3rd gen blues that faded clear coat in a year

I have owned Honda, Subaru, Ford, Acura, GMC, Volkswagen and Toyota. There always seems to be some owners who whine about the paint durability. Granted, I had a paint issue with Volkswagen but it wasn't a chipping issue. And guess what, when driving down at freeway speeds, if a pebble hits your hood, the paint will most likely chip.

 

My windshield has more dings than a front of the car.

 

Toyota paint is actually pretty good. Its NOT thin.
Its been a great paint to work for in terms of detailing.

I also will tell you a ceramic coat would do nothing to stop that chipping. Its gonna happen coating or not. Ceramic coats are hard but you have something contact the paint that will scratch it, its just going to scratch into the coating and then into the paint.
And when you get swirling/scratches in a ceramic coat you can’t just break out your trusty buffer and fix you have to take it back to your detailer to fix. And I’m going to assume it will cost you.

 

Rock chips happen. If the OP was soooo worried about any possible defects before getting the truck protected... Garage it until protected. I guarantee you most all of us have a rock chip or two within weeks to months of owning our trucks.

It’s bound to happen in most any vehicle. Sucks but it’s true. You should have left it off the road until getting it protected to ensure a clear canvas. Sorry it happened but you gotta understand that this crap happens.

 

I've been really successful at not getting rock chips over the years. Don't follow close, use mud flaps, no tires past the fenders. Change lanes if the person in front of you doesn't have flaps, or give a ton of distance. My 13 year old 2nd gen didn't have hardly any chips when I got my 18. My wife's 3 year old car (a Toyota) has zero as well as she follows the same motto.

 

Never said any of that, Tacoma number 7, just amazed how easily the truck chips. And why would the thread get locked?...

I agree. And its not a supercar, its a Tacoma, and yes Murphy's Law and yes life happens, not the end of the world, just a bit frustrating. And the only cermaic pro / xpel installer by me is 2 hours away. Ideally, yes I should have just parked it or waited for delivery after install, but again its just a Tacoma. It's also a vehicle and its bound to get dings, scratches, chips, etc. I understand that, just frustrating and honestly in my opinion what seems like thin paint.

 

I know full well ceramic coating wont protect from rocks, thats marketing nonsense. I was planning on having the truck paint corrected, then installing xpel ultimate followed by ceramic coating, hence the frustration with the chip. In the end its just a truck and shit happens, but none the less frustrating. I am by no means a detailer or have any other ways of judging the paint, just seemed thin to me since I didnt hear a ding, havent been following closely, avoiding hwys, etc prior to PPF and coating. Oh well.

I think every little ding and chip actually helps you be more adventurous and not freak out as much. It definitely sucks balls but once you get over the initial pissed offness it’s a little easier to stomach a dog nail scratch, trailing pinstripe or a door ding from some SOB when I specifically park as far away from other cars as possible!!!!! Damn it to hell! It gets easier though once you remember the truck is still totally badass in the long run!
