The new standard is 0w16. My 2018 Camry hybrid runs it. The main reason for 0w20 and 0w16 is the weight. The thinner the oil, the less crankshaft resistance (more fuel efficiency) in the pan as well as exceptionally close tolerances.

    Good read!

We just bought a new 2019 Corolla hatchback and it came with 0W16, the manual says you can run 0W20, if needed.

At 1000 miles I drained the 0W16 out, it looked like used brake fluid. Put in Pennz Ultra Plat 0W20.

Getting almost 33 mpg on auto trans and we drive it “spirited”.

Oil is oil as long as the viscosity is correct

Agreed, but some flow better than others, especially at -40F where 100% synthetics are really needed. I’m just an oil nut.

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Yeah. Ultimately I just want to do what's right for the engine. But it's confusing when there are 2 conflicting events. Toyota literature says 5w-30, yet dealer filled with 0w-20 after a Head gasket replacement.

@Taco'09 I messaged torspd as well. He said go back to 5w-30. It was critical for me because I want to maintain a warranty on the service, and prevent future events.

The dealer will use whatever is 10 ft. away from the vehicle.

The specifications for your engine has retroactively been updated to 0w20 synthetic at 10k mile OCI. You're fine. The dealer did NOT make a mistake.

If 5w30 shears down to a 20wt, what does 0w20 shear down to?

It doesn't shear nearly as much, being synthetic.

I'm still unsure why I really followed this thread.

I change my Mobil 1 0w-20 Advanced Fuel Eco oil and Yota 90915-YZZD3 filter on my 2TR-FE every 5k miles. It's what works for me. Never had it tested, though.
Has the typical cold start chatter for about 2 minutes on these winter mornings, then goes away. Summer temps have about 10 seconds of noise. Not until the miles creep well beyond the current 70k, will I worry about changing the oil type. Or boost it.

EDIT: Buy these larger oil filters (because more filter media is moar betterest) and catch the 5qt jug on sale at Walmart for roughly $23 and oil changes become very much sore peter price doing it yourself.

Interesting. SWMBO's RAV4 manual specifies 0w20 every 5k miles. OOPS--I checked the manual and there are 5k mile maintenance checks, but the oil change interval is specified as 10k, except for frequent short trip usage. And I just ordered and received three more oil filters. Guess I am set for a while.

This document is very curious, and in particular, I'm surprised I haven't seen a mod thread about turning the Tacoma 4.0 into a Tundra 4.0. In 2013 the Taco 4.0 was 236 hp, the Tundra was 270 hp. That would be kinda nice.

The oil cap between my '13 DCSB Prerunner and the '13 Tundra 5.5 qts vs 6.4 qts and the Tundra gets the 0w-20 treatment while the Taco doesn't. A quick google indicates the oil filters are the same, so there must be a bigger pan? Longer dwell time in the pan allows better cooling? That has me thinking about the tow package and what a new ECM program could do with my engine.

Exactly. The OP is completely over thinking this.
Perfect example is the 2nd gen honda pilot. Over its six year run the specs on the oil changed THREE times, yet the engine is the exactly the same all throughout.

this also bothers me about the 75w85 gl5 gear oil that Toyota recommends to use, I use the Redline version of it but ive never come across a UOA with the Toyota or the Redline oil to see how well it performs

It's had that chatter since day one. Common on the 2.7 engine I've learned.

Doesn't hold a candle to the H22 I had in my Prelude. Chattered from start to shut off! All the way into BRRAAAAAAP vtec

Yeah, 0W-20 for one oil change interval (I’d probably halve it at 5k) is not going to hurt anything. Switch back to 5W-30 at the next change. No biggie.

You'd spend a king's ransom for 34 more HP. Would not be worth it. Much easier to sell the used Tacoma and buy a used 270HP V6 Tundra.

I assumed as much, but, isn't that the MO of a TacomaWorld member? Sign up and open up the wallet?

It would be interesting the the bill of materials for the two different assemblies, what are all the changes, obviously the oil pan. But is it just ECM tuning? Better exhaust flow, heads/valvetrain?

And going back to the document, why not a 0w-20 in the Taco 4.0, and why only conventional recommended? I would love to see the A3 document detailing the testing and results and conclusion to not make/recommend that change.
