1500 mile road trip avg 17.3mpg!

Was his 24 on the exact same specific route as you, or does he just say " i get 24mpg highway" because he got it once on a flat open highway doing 65?

just did a 1400 mile trip to Pittsburgh from Wilmington NC and back after Christmas with new 265-75/16 tires and averaged about 18.5-19.5, was averaging about 22 with the factory 245's but overall very happy how the truck performed and drove, kept it around 70-72..

 

I'm not sure how I missed your thread on mpg until now. Nicely done.

 

I mean I get 25-26mpg highway no problem..

I find it hard to get under 19 mpg city driving unless it’s a super quick trip

 

Love these mileage threads. When I drive 20 miles out of town, slightly uphill, to hunt birds, my cold 2.7L gives a trip average of about 20mpg. Coming back in the now warmer afternoon and babying the throttle just for fun, my 20 mile trip back yields 31 or 33 mpg, indicated.
I'm planning on catching the Trout Opener in the Eastern Sierra in a few months, and will mention my mileage going up and down highway 395, with a side trip to Telescope Peak.

 

Highway driving is what gets me pissed off.
I can drive back n forth to work all week long without getting on the highway... but as soon as I'm on the highway during the weekend, I immediately go into a rage. 6th gear ? USELESS. May as well not even be in the transmission. 5th gear isn't much better. The ONLY gear that will hold and maintain a constant speed with a headwind or slight grade... is 4th gear. So... honestly... 5th AND 6th may as well not be there. I'd rather rev the piss out of the engine and maintain a constant speed... instead of dancing back and forth between gears every time the wind blows.

 

I’m calling BS here. I babied the shit out of my truck when it was stock to see what average to a tank I could get, and it was 15.6

I drive from my house to my folks winter place at least once a week. About a 260 miles round trip, average speed 70 to 85 MPH. I was averaging 21.7 MPG until I switched out my tires from 245/75-16 to 265/65-17. Almost the exact same height but a inch or so wider. Now averaging 19.7 to 20.1. Like most said, if I drop down to 65 MPH I get a lot better mileage.

The auto trans does suck if using cruise control, Florida roads are pretty damn flat, but the slightest incline and it starts down shifting.

Next summer I bet I'll love my trip up I-75 going thru the mountains in Tenn, and KY to Cincinnati.

I did research before buying the truck, so no real surprises...yet.

 

It's the crazy gearing that's the issue, max speed in gears with the auto (e.g. 6,000 rpm):

1: 39 mph
2: 67 mph
3: 94 mph
4: 140 mph
5: 202 mph
6: 241 mph

Even at 100mph, you'll only be turning 2,500rpm in 6th. Nice for a top-tier supercar, but not optimal for a midsized pickup.

Swapping in 5.29 Gears:
1: 29 mph
2: 49 mph
3: 69 mph
4: 103 mph
5: 150 mph
6: 178 mph

 

That's really poor mileage. There's got to something wrong or you're really not babying it. Just driving without giving it much thought I get 18.5 - 19 around town. That's with stop lights, school zones and short trips (3 miles or so) with winter gas. I shut of the engine if I'm waiting on a train but other than that I just drive. A few times a month when I get on the freeway for a 20 mile trip and go 65 mph or so those trips get me 22-23 mpg. All that's about the advertised MPG for my truck which I expected when I bought it.

 

So, really what you are saying is we need a 2JZ and Big Turbo to take advantage of our gearing? I'm in, who's with me???

I think what he's saying is the truck is geared really stupid.
It's as if the shifting were calibrated for a turbo diesel that doesn't rev over 2500rpm.

 

My FRS gets 26MPG @ 115

 

I never thought about how the gearing would be with the hilux 2.4L diesel, it does make perfect sense if a 3,500 rpm max is in the formulas...
