They actually loose money this day and age paying cash. Financial companies give kick backs to dealers among other things for getting people financed. Also after the auto crash manufacturers stopped giving as much or any kick backs for volume of sales so dealerships are less likely to sell for less than their cost where previously they would sell under cost because of the kick backs. There is a lot more to this but that is just a quick and dirty explanation.

Well, even at 15% off they are still making a profit. There is always that one dealership willing to do it. There are strategies the buyer can take advantage of. There is a service called Fighting Chance. You pay $40 bucks and an insider will send you all the prices for every invoiced item on a vehicle. I used this once, knew what I wanted and how much it cost, I played the game, "let me talk to the manager". I stopped him before he could walk away and said "here, take this price to the manager, if wants to sell the truck (my Tundra) I am willing to sign tonight". The guys eyes bugged out. He was like I can't sell for this low. I said ok, then the other dealership 3 hours away in Pennsylvania will get the deal, and I got up and started to walk away. He said hold on, let me see. I drove the truck home.

I have gone as far as faking a agreed upon price from a dealership using their letter head that I copy and pasted and redacted the crucial parts saying out of professional courtesy I can divulge the names, bla bla bla. Did that with an Acura I bought. I got the first dealer I showed the fake quote to give me a better quote, said I would sleep on it, then took that quote to the final dealership. Drove the TSX home.

Then there is the Consumer Reports "Build & Buy" service. Dealers in the area pre-agree to sell at discounted rates. I wanted a Honda Crosstour. I did the build and buy at work online, and by the time I was 20 minutes away from work I had 3 dealerships fighting to sell me the car. I ultimately saved 18%.

Of course different vehicles will net you different discounts. Tacos are tough. They are very sought after. I did very well on mine though. I had a 4Runner lease at the end of a 4 year term with only 45k miles on it though so I had a ton of leverage. My Lexus was different all together. I built it and ordered it the way I wanted it. I only got that for 13.5% off sticker.

I have bought 15 vehicles since 2003. All new. Generally, I trade them in before the tires need replacing. My Tacoma will be the end of that cycle. My Lexus too. There is nothing out there that suits me better. It's a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I am not much for buying new or having a payment. So I just pay cash and buy used what I want. I know the inner workings pretty well I've worked for dealerships in the past. Costco is doing something similar to the old Consumer reports deal.

Just say it like it is, the guy just threw away about 8 grand paying cash.

Drive it to the next dealer and let them give him the 40k trade in value.

Never pay cash for a depreciating asset.
    That is financial advice 101.

Yea, I wish i could pay cash. I've just never had the skills to buy used and fix them up. Except motorcycles.

And I hate payments but have come to accept them. Like death and taxes. And don't get me wrong, my tactics only work once. Not every dealer is gonna oblige me. I may have to go to ten or more dealerships. I am prepared to though. That's why I am glad at this stage of my life I have a great truck and a great car that suits me/us.

Always shop around and haggle like hell no doubt. I don't have to fix them up usually lol. But I go over them with a fine tooth comb or know what I am getting into when I buy one not running etc.

Yea, and trust me, I am no financial wizard. I got lucky with my 4R lease but would never do that again.
