That sounds like leaky injectors, they lose prime or flood the engine momentarily and you end up with that little gap before it works fine

    Too many to list
It wouldn't spin if the timing belt. You'd just hear the starter.

totally intermittent - like maybe once or twice a month? i was thinking maybe the timing belt had lost some teeth to it or starting wearing funky. the injectors (now that I'm searching on that) sound like a very probable cause since what others are describing sounds like the behavior I'm seeing. always something, right?

Eh, easy enough I suppose. Remove all the injectors and take them to be cleaned and flow tested. They'll check for leaks too. Then you just reinstall them and go on your merry way

No prob, of all the things to have to work on on the engine those aren't too terrible. Good opportunity to clean the throttle body and intake plenum.

    Cold start? Hot start?

X2 on it sounding like an injector issue

My buddy with a 4runner had that same issue when his fuel pump was dying, it's sort of a 50/50 on this one without putting a fuel pressure gauge on the injector rail to test

It’s been storming the past few days, going to be raining for the next seven days straight.

I pulled my floormats out to dump the accumulated crud and noticed both of them had condensation and moisture on the bottoms.

I felt the carpet and it’s pretty damp. Any idea where this water is coming from? Cowl maybe?

What kind of question is that? Of course they're not rolled down.

I wouldn't be asking if the windows were rolled down. I'm not an idiot.

Passenger side moisture could be due to plugged AC condensate drain

Thanks, I'll have to give that a look once it stops raining. I do remember reading a thread where someone took some silicone and sealed the cowl area, still have a suspicion it could be a source.
